I don't smoke and dont enjoy the littering at all but here's how I look at it...by writing one ticket you then ethically have to write everyone you see do it.....ure not going to do that so therefore it boils down to you being annoyed with something and having a bug up ure you know what that day and writing someone a ticket.....that's not fair if it's not consistent and unfortunately that's how a lot of cops are....I don't know you or what kind of cop you are I'm just saying going after an issue like that does not represent what I would like to see in my local PD

I'd pull 'em over and let them know that it's littering and could be a $200 fine. The above post is pretty much how I feel.

I hate people tossing them out when I'm behind them on the bike.

There is no way any officer in America could be held to that standard. I could write speeding tickets 24/7, yet I would not be available to respond to any other more important calls throughout my shift, therefore I have to let a lot of speeders pass by without giving them a ticket. It is called discretionary decision making and people use it every single day in every kind of job when attempting to solve problems. It is unfair to judge LEO's any differently as they attempt to balance their every move so as to make their environment safe not only for the public but for other officers.

I give a lot of people warnings, way more warnings than tickets.

Filters are not biodegradable. You want to give 'em a ticket... have at it. Definite fire hazard and I'm a former smoker.
What peeves me is the guy that dumps an ashtray full of butts in the parking lot.

Ok I can see your point....but u ticketing my neighbor for this type of littering is making my neighborhood and your fellow officers safer?....I think not...its a stupid ticket that you want to write because the act ANNOYS YOU.....as you said....if that's what you want to do....by all means you've got the badge.....i just think your time as an officer should be better spent is all I'm saying

This is correct. Writing a ticket is one thing but making sure it sticks if someone fights it is another. I'm all for it.

My thoughts exactly. Throwing out a butt is no different than throwing out a fast food bag. It's littering and it's against the law.

Sure is...no argument there....that wasn't my point....it would be the same thing if you starting writing people for the air freshners hanging on the mirror....perferctly legit ticket...waste of time

I can see you have some issues with LEO's and that is cool. I am annoyed about a lot of behaviors (even some of mine) but I don't ticket or bother people every day all day because I am annoyed, it is America and people deserve to be left a lone for the most part. I use discretion in each situation. I never said ticketing someone for littering is making your neighborhood safer, I made that comment in the context that I have to weigh each decision to ticket instead of ticketing everyone equally as you suggested. I made the point it was not even close to being possible. I don't think you understood me correctly.

I spend my time doing a lot of stuff much more important, trust me.

Enough of my pathetic rear end....I was just talking about littering.

Do what you think is right. If you have doubts talk to a suppv/judge for their thoughts.

Personally, drives me nuts. But our state has a way for citizens to also report litter-ers online and I have used it...

I was just trying to get people's opinions as to public sentiment. It means a lot to me.

No issues with LEOs at all...multiple friends and family in different forms of law enforcement.....but I'm confident that when I ask them this same question they will all say it would be a waste of their time.....no animosity toward you just voicing my opinion.....I respect what you do greatly and do not know you to judge you at all....just glad we can have a discussion about a difference of opinion....kinda get into it sometimes like we are in the garage having a cold one shooting the ****:D

Cool with me BackStrap. I have a pretty good compass that keeps me plugging away ethically. But I like to know the public opinion on things as that is who I serve.

If the weather is dry...ticket them. Fire hazard reguardless of these so called safe cigerettes.

We get a lot of fires off I-95 during the summer as a result of people throwing out cigarettes from their vehicles.

I know its shady-ish...but a cigerette in the snow or rain does no harm. One in the dry grass? Well...youve all seen smoky the bear.

Its even worse when property gets damaged. The wilderness actually benefits from fire most of the time. Alot of belongings can never be replaced....
