I did watch a podcast a few days back and I did find his story kind of off. Setting that side, if all they have is a written permission issue that is utter BS. Since when do you need written permission to hunt your immediate family's land? Unless his sister says he wasn't supposed to be there, or they have something else I call BS.
Agree. This is such a petty charge. " poached buck" is headlines everywhere now. Makes me sick!. " I've heard" this/ that on several forums and news headlines. Guess what, I've " heard" you got caught fuckkn a chicken in 8th grade.
I'll tell you how law enforcement sometimes operates. They get sent all kinds of circumstantial evidence of a crime, lots of it. They begin digging and see all the circumstantial stuff they received looks legit. Then they find a solid violation such as needing written permission (even if that sounds trivial) so that gives them legal rights to ramp up their investigstion/seize items/search warrant. Just the way the game is played sometimes. So even if the dnr only lists the written permission thing, more than likely they have a lot more and that was just the starter piece to get the ball rolling.
That makes alot of sense. It's the easiest crime to make stick and collect evidence fast before it's lost. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
This^ there's definitely more to the story, in this case I would assume they are gathering the evidence and building a case before more details are released. They don't just go an cease equipment and trophies for a minor law breakage.
Also they are only going to give enough info for the investigation to the media. Don’t want to have everything out in the open for every Tom , Dan & harry to look into it. More investigation to do yet.
If this becomes nothing more but a " written " permission slip thing, it will make me me super pissed off!. That ain't " poaching " !!
I don't know anything other than what has already been shared or talked about. I will say this. If he shot the deer on his sisters land and she gave him permission to hunt there, I think its a really crappy deal for him. Law or no law, I'm sorry but thats BS. I would think a simple phone call to the sister by law enforcement should be sufficient to clear it up and everyone goes on their way. PA has a similar BS law for Sunday hunting on property and in my opinion, its just another money maker to ding people on really stupid stuff. That said, I don't know. I think there is far more to the story than this. If the trail cam pics from 20 miles away are true, then I have to believe the guy was hunting somewhere he wasn't supposed to be. On top of that, he "forgot" his cell phone that day. Did he do so because then law enforcement couldn't go back and track where he was? Not only that, but he claimed he shot the deer in the evening and then made a recovery the next day. Yet all of the pics I saw, were at night. There was also a video floating around of him standing beside the deer as it was hanging and he lifted the head easily. I don't claim to be a smart guy, but any deer that I recovered the next day, was stiff as a board, not dangling like a freshly killed animal. Of course this is all speculation on my part but I can say things dont add up at all to me. I hope I'm wrong because thats a world class buck. The fact that they're investigating this tells me that its far more than a simple case of not having written permission.

What a damn shame, I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. The extent some people are willing to go is alarming
Looks like it’s going to trial next week, then everything will be solidified. Curious to see the final verdict.
Hope they don't drop alot of the charges for a deal. He knew what he was doing and should face the consequences.
Thing is most master mind law breakers, they are idiots who do not think things thru, and usually get caught.
I knew he was full of it. There were so many things during his interviews with various outlets that any seasoned hunter could pick out easily. From the obvious of the deer being seen/watched 10-15 miles away from where he allegedly killed it, to not taking his phone with him to saying he was a novice hunter who borrowed a crossbow to do a little hunting, but in the same interview, talking about how he has seen and hunted other big bucks in the past... it all stunk. I surely hope they hammer him and all parties involved.
Why is it so odd that a person would leave home without a cell phone when going out to enjoy hunting? There are many people who are not addicted to cell phones.
I leave my house all the time without my phone, while hunting though I always bring it. It's probably my worst trait and greatest flaw Sent from my Pixel 6 using Tapatalk
I guess I am old enough where we used to venture into the woods with a compass, there were no cell phones. I go fishing and hunting to escape my phone, I don't want to talk to anybody. If I get myself in a situation I will get myself out.
