I'm out there to fill my tag. If I can do that on the first day that's even better.

For me, it would have to be a veeeery nice buck. I'm with GFY, I could'nt let my season end that fast.
I can't even imagine not being in the Illinois woods during the rut!

I have been in that situation and have shot the buck, being that it is what Im looking for.... But really, then you can always travel to other states and hunt.
We open in early/mid September in Wisconsin so it can be a long wait till the end of the season.
I have actually had more success with true mature bucks in early season than during the rut. Now, where I do most of my hunting has been deemed a CWD area and there is no limit to how many deer or even bucks you can shoot. So now its really a void point.

I say if you have to think twice about shooting an animal then he or she is worthy!

Being I'm In a one tag area 95% of the time It does apply to me but rather I think the question should read.. Do you quit hunting a good buck with a week left In the season and take a doe or do you hold out and possibly go with out any venison at all? These are tougher decisions then most think. I had one hell of a time with this last year and finally made my decision on hunting for a doe the last 2 days of the season. Luckily It worked out for me and I got myself a doe.

I am shooting the doe with more than 2 weeks before the end of the season.

Yeah if Mr. buck fits my goal going into the season, then he's getting it on day one just the same as the last day. If I only had one tag (hypothetical) I'd still go out and sit in a tree and observe.

If the buck meets the criteria for what I am looking for then yes of course I would shoot him....otherwise why even hunt the early season if you are not willing to part with your tag?

I have waited towards end then I ended up eating my tags instead of deer meat. That will never happen again! Does are just as good! I have 23 kills the whole time I have been hunting and I have only killed 6 that have had antlers. Three of them where small and killed because of injuries from fighting! I am happy just to get meat and if it has a large rack that is just a bonus!

Not if you buy a left over Non-resident tag. :)

Now to answer the question, for years in Idaho you only could get one tag. Now its different if you want to fork over the cash for a NR leftover..so these days I always buy one and have two in my pocket. But back in the day when I only got 1 deer tag a season, I would hold out for the most part. But if a stud came by, heck no I wouldnt be holdin' out. Here you can hunt, elk, bear, cougar, lopers, turkeys etc etc in the fall, there is always something else to chase if you tag out early on your deer.

It depends on the Buck. Here in MN I have the situation to deal with personally. There is one buck this year that I've been hunting for two years now and he would be the only deer I would take on the first day. He is the one in my profile picture.

it depends on the deer i guess or my freezer status but just b/c you only got 1 tag doesnt mean its over i like to know whats going on w/ them even when i cant let an arrow fly just watching them learning what and when and where but opportunity is a shadow of possibility so i guess i'd take that shot if the chance was there cause there is no guarentee of tomorrow!
