As a bunch of white dudes it's easy for us to sit around and tell a group of people who were persecuted and darn near wiped out that they shouldn't be offended by something we call them. I've always thought that "Redskins" was a pretty derogatory name and frankly I'm surprised they haven't changed it already. A word like "Indian" or "Chief" certainly doesn't have the same meaning as "Redskin". Anyone who thinks they're the same is huffing paint thinner.
There are plenty of native Americans who think using Indian or chief in that context is offensive. There are also plenty that don't My guess is eventually all native references will be gone from all sports teams, it's just a matter of when.
I thought the name change was stupid right up until I read this post. You're absolutely right, Justin.
I am not a redskins fan at all...far from it. But I hope they keep their name. Its an iconic franchise with alot of history. I could see a name change if the team moved or something, but not just to satisfy a tiny smattering of people that claim to be offended. I understand that some folks might actually feel offended, but that is certainly not the intention. Heck, there isn't anything that doesn't offend someone these days. We are so PC in this country it makes me want to puke.
