Just watched a report on ESPN's outside the lines and they were discussing the possible name change of Washington Redskins. The request to change name is coming from a conference at the Smithsonian that stated the name is offensive and sends the wrong image for using derogatory terms toward a group of people. Are we to start changing the names of every team or organization because it offends agroup of people, I don't think these teams have ever tried to use any name or phrase to offend anyone or attack civil rights. I find it an interesting debate and just wondered anybody elses thoughts.
This happened at the University of North Dakota when they had to drop their Fighting Sioux name. They currently are known as simply the University of North Dakota. I personally don't know what the big deal is, BUT I'm also not Native American so can't really put myself in their place to see how it feels. If a team was given the name "Washington Whites" or Washington Fighting Crackers" would it offend you? Not me, although then the team would probably be sued because the name excluded other groups.
That whole UND thing was a crock since no one was actually complaining about the name, yet the NCAA decided it was offensive.
The UND thing was dumb because what's offensive about "fighting Sioux"? Everyone is afraid of offending a single person these days. They aren't promoting anything against native american's by being named the Redskins. Perhaps we should change the Miami Dolphins because no one ever asked the Dolphins in the ocean if they want to be the mascot of a mediocre, at best, team?
I'm a Skins fan so I'm biased toward the name but can see where the name is offensive toward some ( but honestly I also think the people they say it offends) aren't the people crying over it!!!! But I will still be a Skins fan regardless if they stay the Skins or have it changed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
They took away the mascot of the fighting illini here a few years back because of this whole debate. Idk I guess I don't see how having a indian is disrspetcful to a population of the people in the country. Should every team and company remove any logo or name that has anything to do with native american culture? They were saying is has to also do with the history of the term "redskin" as well as the history of the organization bc they fought against allowing black athletes being on the team. Should the Yankees change their name as well, I'm sure it was used as a slang term one way or another through out history? Also one of the questions brought up was "were does it stop?" Your notgonna ever please everyone out there, there's groups that don't believe in saying merry Christmas so idk.
$$$$ When I think of the Redskins or the Chiefs I dont think "wow, those Indians sure are dumb" or something like that. Why does it offend them? Do they think people are making fun of them? Having that group of people as a mascot almost puts them on a pedestal, or honors them.
The people calling for these name changes probably aren't even native american. It's probably white, left wing, elitists, who have nothing better to do than tell everyone else what they should be doing with their lives.
If you look at it this way you can see how some people might find the name offensive. And personally I think it probably should be changed. But if you try to change the Cleveland Indians name we're fighting lol
They want to change the name because the team founder was a known racist. Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk 2
I'm a skins fan like AshAid. Growing up a Redskins fan, you never even question whether it offended anyone. I think political correctness has gone too far in many ways. There has been at least one player that voiced his opinion indirectly about the Redskins name (Sam Bradford, OU) because of his heritage. But I'll take RG3 over Sam Bradford any day! http://www.hogshaven.com/2010/2/3/1291183/sam-bradford-might-have-problems
I think we should just go ahead and drop any reference to Indians, Redskins, Tomahawk chops or whatever from the American scene. Just don't mention a damn Indian ever again. I also think we should open casinos to compete with the Indian casinos now in existence. Let's just never talk about a redman, indian, squaw or whatever again. There are no Braves.... just chumps. We don't need no stinking chumps.
I knew Bradford was of Native American decent but never read that article. Wow!!! Also not to hijack thread but you ever get on ExtremeSkins? If not you should its a nice site. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
