You just saved me some typing gplant.

I think most people don't have a clue how much of an impact poaching has on a state. Here in Michigan the DNR figures as many deer are poached each year as are legally shot. I think they might be guessing low. It makes a huge difference here. Especially in area's that are already have low deer numbers.

To answer the original question. Outside of hunting they are some of the best guys you'd meet.

By some folks definition I have poached! Wrong yes, proud no!But I have matured and learned a few things about myself...bowhunting has taught me to enjoy being close to game and sit in awe of be able to do that.Last year was my first full year of doing it and I passed up alot of game legally so I could see no reason to look for a chance to do it the other way.But I would hate to be juror looking at a man that shot a deer to feed his family rather than swallow his pride and take welfare.

This is a good point. Poaching is an unlawful equivalent to speeding based upon our justice system. How many of us speed?

You have me curious now. How is stealing the same as going 5 miles over the speed limit?

maybe like that in MI, but many areas (and I'm sure poaching per capita is a similar number in most states) there is still an over population problem... WI is nearly over run with deer and down in AL where we hunt we've actually had a DNR agent tell us 'off-the-record' to take extra does if we felt the need because of the population problem... to quote him when talking about the deer population he offered it up himself "if you take 2-3 does per day I'll look the other way."

Lol!! This Is a hunting forum Brett, poaching Is going to piss people off regardless of other laws that are being broken. Go on to a MADD forum and see If you see them talking about poaching. You will not cause that's not what the forum Is about. You can't compare the two on a hunting forum.

He stated "Poaching is an unlawful equivalent to speeding based upon our justice system.". I am just wondering how going 5 miles over the speed limit is equivalent to stealing?

So, when I pass a police officer and he clocks me going 5 miles over the speed limit and doesn't stop me then he should also allow the guy stealing stuff out of your house to go on his way or he is a hypocrite?

Exactly! But it seems that every time there is a thread on poaching or trespassing or....someone invariably says "Well, if you go over the speed limit then you are a hypocrite". This thread is about poaching and our thoughts on it, not drunk driving, speeding or anything else, just poaching.

LOL you added more. But that sums up what I do. I overlook speeders and the guy turning around in my driveway (that happens way to often since I live on a dead end) and don't call the cops on them but I have, and will, call the cops on drunk drivers or poachers.

We don't have to much of a issue with over population.Maybe around towns and places where hunters cant go. Between the hunters,5+antlerless tags each hunter can get,Yotes, and poachers they are keep in check pretty good.At Least that's the way it is in my hunting areas.Poaching is not a tool to be used to control population issues. There are legal ways to take care of that.Controlled ways or there should be.Poaching is a crime plain and simple!

poaching in some states is heavily regulated, the unfortunate thing is that some of the states have such restrictive harvests that poaching would be a good thing... otherwise they need to open up their limits a bit more to control the herd
