Thinking about switching to the havoc broadheads. They look like a solid built tip but was wondering if anyone else has had any problems with them.
I haven't used them but I have held them in my hand. I know a couple people that have tried them. I know one of them switched the following year, but he did show me a picture of a big hole it put in a doe... my problem with them is I don't like how close the blades are to the tip of the broadhead when closed. I'm not sure how well this broadhead would perform on quartering shots because of this. It is extremely sharp but the blades are a little on the thin side. Sent from my ALCATEL A845L using Tapatalk
I just talked to my friend that used them and didn't the next year. He told me he shot 2 deer with them. 1 spine shot 1 lung shot. He said both blades on both heads were bent. He said he didn't like the mechanism that kept them closed and he said he did have one open in flight. He said he was positive it did. Sent from my ALCATEL A845L using Tapatalk
I have used them with success. Had a few extras and was not my primary head so I also shot a few squirrels with them. Bout cut them in half. So they flew well for me. As far as recommendations for expandables I like the NAP kill zone and Rage Hypodermics, for fixed blades I like QAD Exodus, Slick Trick and WASP Drones. I am shooting a much heavier arrow this year and will be trying the Xecutioner this year. Worked great on a hog earlier in the year. Just have to shoot a few and see what flies best for you. Good luck
I am a fixed blade guy, but one of my nephews shot Havocs and killed his first black bear with one. He reported a good blood trail and easy recovery. Every mechanical head made has someone claiming the blades opened in flight.....Rage, NAP, Swacker, etc.....you name it.
They have basically the same profile and retention mechanism as a Rage Hypodermic, so I'm not sure how they would be a pain to tune. I would be a bit concerned about a hard quarter shot though. Not that I care about celebrity hunters, but I know the Bone Collector guys use the Havocs, mostly the 3 blade. They kill a lot of deer with them. No joke just as I'm typing this I'm watching an episode on Roku. Think it's their Season 5 . "Getting the Party Started in Kentucky." Anyway, as I was typing that one of the guys just skipped one off the shoulder of a nice buck on a hard quarter away with no more hurt than a patch of hair shorn off. I've played that thing back 4-5 times now and I noticed that while they do product placement close ups on every other bit of equip the guy is using; not once do they show the broadhead. Not one view of the the broadhead at all. That's not an accident. So that quarter concern is valid.
Nap sling blade is a good head. Penetrates very well and has big entrance holes. You can definitely take quartering shots with this head and it doesn't take much pressure to open them up but are approved for crossbows. Very sharp and strong too. Dead ringer rampage 2 blade 2 inch is another good one. The only negative I can give about this one is the entrance holes are a little small.Other than that it's a great broadhead in every category..... I've shot or tested the nap killzone, swhackers, rage2, wasp jak hammers, nap spitfires, rocket steelhead, rampage 3 blade over the years. I think i Iike the first 2 I mentioned best. Don't get me wrong, they all will kill, just make sure you do your part and you should be fine. Shoot what you have confidence in and good luck with whatever you choose in the upcoming season.
