Moultire M990i vs Covert MP6 Black

Moultrie M990i vs Covert Extreme Black 60

I have had my mind set on getting the Moultrie M990i for quite some time but am really considering a covert... What are your thoughts/experiences? From what I have read there doesn't seem to be that big of a difference and want to hear what you have to say.

I don't have any Moultries but I do have Covert Red 40's and Black 60's. I love both of them and use the Red 40 for photos and Black 60's for video's.

I am partial to Coverts, but for comparison:

We run two moultrie M-80's and a dying Moultrie i40.

The Moultries have good night flash, but are somewhat grainy during the day:

The Coverts take better day/night pictures, have better battery life, have a better trigger speed and WAY better customer service.

    Proof is in the pudding:

I will never buy another camera besides Covert again.

Those are some great shots - Especially those Turks!

What Coverts are you running? I love the price of the MP6 Black but the Extreme Black 60 looks amazing.

I would go with the Covert if for no other reason than the trigger speed. I have a Moultrie M80 and it's a real workhorse and takes very nice day and night pics but it's trigger speed is a little slow. The Covert takes better daytime pics and is much faster.

    Blessings.........Pastorjim

Covert-battery life, pic quality, setup, cost, customer service, did I mention battery life. I have a Red 40, Mp6, 2-Mp-e5, and uhhh 4 or so Mp6 blacks. (For now, be careful its addicting!)

I have 14 of the M-880's running this year since Sept. They work very well overall. Two problems that could be improved...trigger speed could be faster and the IR is visible. I have deer looking at them and sniffing them all the time though it doesn't ever seem to really spook them. Also have a few whiteout pics from the IR flash at close range.

They have a great range and take great pics and video and the battery life has been fantastic with mine....I can't complain a lot about them, they are the best I've ever used but I haven't tried coverts yet either. I'll be adding another dozen or so next year and will try the covert invisible flash/blackflash cams then. I paid around $100 each for my Moultries

How much land do you have for that many cams??

I think I've decided to go with Covert but I'm not sure what one to go with. Think I might go with the Black 60 - Around the same price as the M990i.

I know I'll be shunned from this site for saying this, but I like my moultrie m990i better than my covert black 60. I think Covert takes incredible daytime pictures, but I'm so tired of looking at pictures of a buck walking on a trail at night and not being able to tell how big the buck is because the rack and body are so blurred. I'm not saying every single ir picture on the moultrie is perfect, but there are far less blurry ir pictures with moultrie than with covert. I don't think the daytime pictures on the m990i are grainy at all. I had a m990i camera out for 2 months, took 800 pictures, and still had 40% battery life, so the battery life is fairly good too. Whatever you choose, you'll be happy! Both Covert and Moultrie are very good cameras!

About 2700 acres, and I agree with Mitch21, my daytime pics aren't grainy at all and they do have anti-motion blur built in them so they do a great job with nightime pics.

I too am in the minority on the Covert vs Moultire debate.

    Moultrie is just better.

With the 990 you get a wider range of field. This actually makes a huge difference. The flash on both of my Covert MP6s is very weak, which means the night pictures really struggle. The strap for my Coverts is also awful, I had to replace both. I honestly haven't found one thing that my Covert is better at than my Moultries. You will get a ton of "Covert is better" answers because a lot of their pro staffers are on here. I'm sorry, but I don't think those guys honestly believe their cameras are better than Moultries.

This is where I have a problem with the "Covert is better" posts. Have you actually ever ran another camera? Pick up a comparable Moultrie model sometime and try it out.

The battery life will be better. The setup is WAY simpler. And I still feel the picture quality isn't close between the two.

I use all Moultrie & I am very happy. I have not used Covert, but a lot of people I trust on this site do. I think both are probably good option.

Battery life is better? The guy above said he got 800 pics and had 40% battery left  Out of the 10 Coverts I have, I have literally changed the batteries in 3 cameras this year. 7 of them have been on trails all year, and I have done nothing but swap cards once a week. The 3 cameras I changed batteries in, they are on corn piles next to Monster Raxx sites. I average about 3,000 pics a week per camera doing this. If I had to change batteries after every 1500 pics, I would have changed batteries roughly 40 times this year....

I can't comment in the pic quality between the two, as I don't run Moultries. They lost me as a customer with the old D55s I had. But, I am more than pleased with my Coverts picture quality.

When I run my Coverts and Moultries on similar settings (similar MPs, shot burst, time waited), my Moultries come out ahead every time. Another problem I have with Coverts is the battery display is just shown by a couple bars. Moultrie gives a %.

It's not that Coverts are bad cameras, they aren't. I just have a hard time comparing them to my M-80s, M-880s and D-55s.

You have had good luck with the 55s? I had 3 of them, and they all quit on me. Mine ended up taped to a tannerite jug
