One of God's commandments, right? (Rhetorical) So, how do we justify killing in the name of your country (war)? If you want to .....please cite Bible verse/passages that backs your POV. Thanks.
this is gonna be a good one! my take (no bible verse) is that there has always been war, and there will always be war. too much area between have's and have-nots
God told (enter name) to kill his son Isaac. All we have to do is repent for our sins and recognize god as our savior...correct in a nutshell PT?
Well, when man wanted to govern themselves, God allowed it, but, this subjected man to the results of them governing themselves, death, being one of the results, just like corruption, and so on. Death, by way of killing, is prominent in the Old Testament, of the Bible. I'm no theologian, but, throughout the Bible, killing in the name of the Lord, or, by the Lord, seems widely accepted. Most of the major wars in the entire history of this World, were motivated by either financial and/or religious motives.
No bible quotes. It's kill or be killed. It's the big proficiency test. Failure is permanent. If you're there you don't have time to "justify it". I once unloaded a whole magazine of M16(18 rounds) in a dink at about 12 inches as he came up out of a hole turning his AK47 towards me. The colonel ask why I shot him so many times, we could have used a prisoner. The general still tells the story and my answer. "He scared the **** out of me colonel". Think of all the horrible things that have been committed by man in Gods name. Do you really think God was in favor of the Pilgrimages. The only thing I could go by would be something like Give unto God etc etc etc. You want to come home to your family and loved ones.... you better be willing to pull the trigger when the time comes. Training usually takes over for most when it must. It's a crappy thing.... but you better buck up when you have to. Will you have nightmares and have it change your life.... you bet.. and you just have to buck up again.
My dad always talked to me about the Old Testament. I am not a religious guy but my dad held many of the teachings of the Bible and the Old Testament to heart. He always told me that God was not as soft as we are currently making him out to be and that there are good people and bad people. And when the bad people come knocking at your door and it is time to get down, take care of business without reservation. He talked about how God put down many unfaithful and wicked people in the Old Testament. I hold to my father's teachings.
number 6 in the Ten commandments "you shall not murder" as told to mosses from god himself, but remember mosses also smashed the orig set. maybe a spell/check issue i dont know. But look at david who carried the tablets in the ark into battle many times so god must have been on his side right? In 1943 the catholic church threw out the writings of mosses saying there was more than one author of the writings. "discovery channel''
Exodus 20 is pretty clear, that one shall not "murder", no matter if its NIV, NKJV or NASB, the only ones I read. NASB is probably the most accurate translation there is. Sorry to say the KJV is probably not. I know many a preacher that gets upset when I tell them that. But I ask them if they ever read the real KJV, in old english and explain its almost unreadable. The hebrew word is "Ratsach' which means to murder, slay, kill (Qal) to murder, slay premeditated accidental as avenger slayer (intentional) (participle) (Niphal) to be slain (Piel) to murder, assassinate murderer, assassin (participle)(subst) (Pual) to be killed when I get confused with things like this, its always best to buy a concordance, and look up the root word, where it was originally tranlated. And then look up the Greek or hebrew translation. Many preachers won't or don't do this. Which is ashame, since today we have more information at our grasp than ever.
Well said, David. Did what you had to do. In my mind (and no, you didn't solicit this....and I'm using you as AN example of my thinking) I give God a little more credit for being able to not always live by a line on a page (that he may or may not have said.....or meant EXACTLY as many today interpret it). Heck, I even think he's earned the right to change his mind if he chooses to. What bugs the piss outta me are the fanatics who will ride one line in the Bible (to fuel their class-envy persecution rants).....and seemingly (or, BLATANTLY) overlook other "sins". THIS is what turns me away from religion.
I am curious Jeff. Why would you care. Your salvation and what happens to you after death will not be there problem when you die, and vise versa.
Well Big....I guess it's just a personal issue I have with total hypocrits thinking they're morally superior to me (or anyone else). Is that a sin, too?.....lol
I understand where you are coming from. I lived this my entire life. But one day, in a fit of rage, I yelled at God from MD all the way to Ky. God put it in my heart, that He shouldn't have to sell this thing called "salvation", and if I knew how good it was, this sells itself. In other words, sure those people are turning you off of religion, but we are all turned off by religion, but we should have a fire ignited for God and fellowship. And we should do it for ourself. We owe it to ourself
In the original Hebrew (what the Old testament was written in) the Commandement in Exodus 20:13 reads: לֹא תִּרְצָח׃ לֹא = not תִּרְצָח׃ = The verb to murder, implying premeditated intent like our legalistic form of murder in the US. The King James translators used the word "kill", however most translations (NIV, ESV, NAS, NRSV, etc.) use the more correct translation "murder". This can also be supported in other areas of the bible also. For instance, in Numbers 35 God tell Moses to make cities of refuge where a person that has killed someone may flee. Further in chapter 36 God goes into detail about how to handle all sorts of "killing" instances. In the original text, the Hebrew word used this time comes from the root נכה . This translates to strike, destroy, or kill. It noticably lacks the same characteristics as "murder". All this shows is that killing, is not killing, is not killing. This of course is just the start......
So....is it "OK" (I'd like to hear your opinion) that I stay away (for the most part) from organized religion? I just have NO desire to be around it.
Yes, and no. God encourages fellowship, encourages us to confess our sins to each other as Paul lays out. But 1 Peter, 2 Peter, and many more warn how organized religion will rob people. It even predicts that near the end of time, it will probably be the norm than the exception. But then explains why its important for us to arm ourselves with the word of God. I am always leary of what a church says. Always on guard. But if I stayed away from Church, I would miss out on some serious jewels of knowledge. Good fellowship with my fellow Christians.
