"Run off the pavement every chance you get", they said. "It's the best thing you can do for your joints" they said. Sure. I was doing my 3 mile run a few minutes ago and I was running on the grassy shoulder every once in a while. Somewhere around 2 1/2 miles I was in the grass and stepped in some freakin' hole and twisted my left ankle. I finished the run and now I have both ankles iced down. I'm hoping it's not going to be a problem since I just started the actual training program last week. Dammit. I suppose it could have been worse. It could have been my right ankle. You know, the one that's been giving me fits for over a month.
Yea I stick to the hardball. I also have many good running trails around here! Hope you recover quick!
That's too bad. Good luck healing. Find some trails if possible. Pavement or concrete is tough on joints. Obviously stay away from grass now. Good luck with the half. Remember to hit bathroom before half race. Ran half one time and didn't get that advice before race. Ha.
Hope you heal quickly. I've never like running because of the impact on my knees. We had to run all the time in the Army. As long as I had a set distance, my theory was the faster I ran, the sooner it was over with. Good luck with healing and with the 1/2 marathon. Since it's a 1/2 marathon, I guess you're only 1/2 crazy!
In college I had teammates that would go out of their way to run on soft surfaces - of course these guys were running 80 plus miles per week. Personally I couldn't care less - my body handles all surfaces fairly well and I thank God for that everyday.
Well, thanks to what Christine refers to as "funky uber-flexible ankles" my left ankle wasn't injured in that stumble. I did another 3 miler yesterday and it held up fine. I have to admit that my old body is having trouble adjusting to this training schedule. I was running three times a week to get back into it. The actual training schedule is four times a week. Short runs on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday with a long run on Saturday. It's not too bad right now when the mileage is 3, 3, 3 and 5 but later on it's going to get tough. My biggest concern is the first week of November, when it's 5, 6, 5 and 13. I haven't yet figured out how I'm going to incorporate that schedule into hunting the rut.
The only time I run off the road is when there is an actual running trail. Sorry to hear about your injury.
Yesterday was my best run yet. The schedule called for a five mile run, but I set out to do six. I've ran seven miles on the treadmill, but this run was outside, complete with hills and slopes. I did the entire six miles without stopping and did it in 1:04. Yeah, yeah, I know. That's slow. You young guys just shut up. This was a three mile course that we just run out and back on. The biggest hills are at the very beginning, which means they were there waiting for me in mile six, but surprisingly they didn't pose a problem at all. My ankle was pretty sore for the rest of the day, but it feels okay today. I'm ready for three more miles tomorrow.
