Two seasons ago was my first year hunting. I got up in the ladder stand at 4:45 and was using a small light to attach my harness to the tree. Suddenly I heard a crashing sound coming towards me and put the light to my chest and freeze. I look down to see the silhouette of a bear walk between the tree and the ladder. That got the heart going.

I've also had a fisher cat go crazy close by in the pitch black. Similar murderous scream.

Finally, last year I was walking through a horse pasture to get to where I enter the woods at about 4:30 AM and as I reach the tree line I hear about 6 coyotes howel. I know I don't have to worry about them but it was definitely an unnerving walk to the stand.

I know there really isn't much to worry about but the mind messes with you.

I am really not all that "scared" in the woods that I hunt - the most scary thing that has ever happened to me on the way to my tree stand in the early morning walking by a flash trail camera that I forgot I had placed brought me to my freaking knees! I tell you one thing, I moved that trail camera off that path after my hunt that day!

All of these reasons are exactly why I have yet to walk to or from my stand in the pitch dark, by myself! The boyfriend bought me a pistol thinking this will help me. I can't promise anything. I will still probably be getting to the cabin before pitch back darkness of night. Yep! I am a chicken and I will be the first to admit it. That is also most likely the reason I didn't get my first deer until New Years day. That was the one and only time he had hunted with me and we went in to the stand well before the sun came up.

I always am on edge goin into my stands in complete darkness. You know the noise are just wild life but your mind plays the what if game with you. One night before going to bed I watched Stephen King's It and knew it was a bad idea because I was goin in early the next am. Every twig snap or leaf rustle I was jumping. I couldn't wait to get to my stand just felt safer Ha Ha. Never do that again!!!!

My biggest fear growing up was looking out my window and seeing a clown standing there waving at me. I have thought about that same image while in the stand... I hate clowns.

I just put my hand on my knife and get ready for a fight, of it sounds that bad. Other than that, I just stand still and see if I can make out what it may be. I did have a some what hair standing experience last season. I got on stand and just set up when about 30 or so yards from me a bobcat let out this nasty screaming sound and was tearing through the woods!! It was pretty crazy sounding.

I think everyone here should watch "The Grey" the night before your season starts and you have to go out to the stand in the dark. That movie wil test the manliest of man. Loved it completely, but I wouldn't go outside the rest of the night. lol

The bow rope was one of the very few times I've ever been freaked out when walking out in the dark. (and don't lie.. it would freak you out too! :D )

One of the other times was when I had walked back to the parking lot (in the dark) and three guys showed up (no other vehicles around) and started chit-chatting with me... which was fine but they sorta semi-circled me while I was up against the truck and then asked if I was out there by myself. I suddenly became very uncomfortable. I hesitated but answered "yes".. while deciding which one I would need to whack with the maglite first..... Turns out they were harmless.. but it could have been bad.

The most freaked out I've been while -sort of- hunting was when I was down at a lease I shared with Justin and Mike. Justin and Mike told me that the guy who used to hunt the property was sketchy and the landowner warned them about this guy. I wasn't sure if Jz and Mike were just messing with me but I made a note of it. So I'm spending the night at the lease.... sleeping in the cab of my truck which is parked out in a semi-secluded pasture. Justin and Mike had headed back up to Chicagoland so it's just me out there. At about 3am, I wake up because I hear footsteps right outside my truck. It's dark and the windows are fogged up so I can't see squat.. I thought about wiping off a bit of the condensation from the window and shining a flashlight out there but I was sure that I'd see a crazed person (or perhaps a psychotic clown) a few inches away. So instead, I laid there and kept telling myself that it was just a cow.

Seriously, was that picture really necessary? Was somebody screwing with you or did you just find that on a google search? I don't hunt very far from you so no posting crazy pics for you.

    :lol::lol::lol:

I know you will be thinking about that pic the first time you are in the woods before/after dark. It's just my way of decreasing my competition. Hopefully it doesn't backfire!

you guys are hillarious! but I have to say I have been scared enough I was willing to sleep in my treestand because I didn't want to get down because of a ghost deer. I was hunting a clear cut in the evening and about 30 mins til dark I see this really eerie fog start rolling in, kinda creeped me out. just as the fog rolls in I here a crunching noise in the fog and see a silhouette of a deer, and i'm not talking about a deer, just it's silhouette there was nothing substantial to it, it looked like a ghost and it was only about 5 yards in front of my stand. anyhow after the ghost deer walked away I climbed higher in the tree and waited until my brother came with the gator to pick me up. It really freaked me out.

It was an hour before sunrise during bowseason last year... While climbing up a poplar tree, I got about 18 feet up and while I was lifting the top portion of my climber to get higher, it happened... A daggum flying squirrel jumped and landed on my head, jumped down to my arm and ran down the tree... Now, 20 something feet in the tree, both hands on your climber, pitch black, in the woods, I would have sworn that Sasquash's baby son was sleeping in the tree adn I startled him.. I locked up so quick and felt like I did not take a breath for 5 minutes.. Once I calmed down, I finsihed climbing.. Hard to concentrate when the sun came up thinking about what just happened.. Its funny now, but hope that never happens again !!!!!!!!

Dude tree rats coming up the tree looking at you HAS to be the most freaky thing ever. They stop dead in tracks and start looking at you - I got 1 eye on the woods and another eye on them tree rats, if they start coming up the tree I will make all kinds of movement and if necessary noise to keep them away! Like get the heck away from me!!!! This tree is currently occupied by me and we aint got room up here for the boff of us!

As far as getting "scared" walking in the woods at dark, I usually have a few minor incidents the first week or two of the season when Im not used to it, but by seasons end Im at home in the woods :). Now as far as deer walking under you when its still dark, I try and freeze, unless it is getting close ot shooting light, then Im getting ready. Story: 2 seasons ago I got up into my stand a good hour+ befor light. Climbed up, pulled up my pack and hung it up and got two pulls on my bow rope when I heard walking. I froze with my bow maybe 6 feet off the ground and the steps were coming right at me. As it reached my stand I could here it breathing and then.....my bow started moving on the rope!! Lightly at first, then a lot more until I could here BONE hitting my bow! At this point I decided I wasnt going to be killing this deer no matter what if it took off with my bow on its head so I began pulling the bow up, which resulted in the deer booking it out of there.

I was walking out from the stand one night. I had deer up until past shooting light so I stayed unttil it was good and dark. While I was walking out I jumped a pheasant a half step in front of me. I thought for sure my heart jumped right out of chest.
