I was told that because of some very rare moon cycle that will not be experienced again for another 150years, this years breeding cycle of all poly-estrous animals will be affected.

I was told that this years rut will be long and mild...No doubt, some does have already been bred.

Does anyone have any additional info regarding this ? I think this is very important for those who really have to rely on the rut to get on a good buck, like myself.

Any tactics or prior experience with slow ruts ?

I'm a pre-med student in the North East and I work full time(luckily from my desk !!), so I have like ZERO time to hunt. So the rut to me is my 'golden nugget', if you will. I don't get to go home to my familiar woods, often, so I'm hunting areas that I really don't know too well.

    Thanks,

    Andrew

    I don't know, I'm not an astrologist.

If I recall correctly, it's a double "hunters" moon, or something.

So breeding activity began sooner, but, will be drawn out over a longer period. Also, given the warms temps, more breeding activity will take place at night.

    That's all I know..

I heard alittle on it, but not alot of detail. I think in general this season will be better anyways. once the temps go back to normal cooler weather and the crops coming down early, there will be alot of big bucks killed this season! I have one under my belt already!

I agree with the crops thing. Corn fields by me are almost all taken in, already. Hopefully that increases my chances !!

What you are talking about is a blue moon and they happen about every 3 years. There is no blue moon this year.

moon cycle zero effect on rut

The moon has no scientifically proven effect on the rut, it only effects deer movement which is commonly associated with rutting activity. The rut is triggered by the change in day light hours which is why it is so consistant. If the moon is full and the deer aren't moving when the rut is on it doesn't mean they are not rutting it just means that more of the activity is happening when hunters aren't there to witness it.

Exactly. I wish these magazines would quit printing these dumb articles. Deer rut the same days every year regardless of the moon phase or what the weather is doing. The only factor in us seeing a lot of day time activity is what the weather is like. Mostly the temperature. Same question every year.

Photoperiodism is what triggers the rut.

I'm well aware of this, and how the equinox changes the amount of day light hours and how the pineal gland in the whitetail senses the change in amount of daylight stimulates the endocrine system, mainly the pituitary gland to release excess amounts of GH which increases testosterone..I know the physiology behind that, but, you're stating that the ONLY effect the moon has on rutting activity is the amount of movement ?

Im stating that the moon has zero effect on the rut and it effects deer movement in daylight hours.

You all keep reading the mags and believing the hype. Some day you will realize that this "early rut/late rut" is a bunch of garbage. I second the fact that the moon has zero effect on the rut. Whitetail are not going to rut 2 weeks later just so they can wait for the full moon. Come on guys.....I really hope you know better than this.

As romantic as it sounds, I have to agree that the moon has little to do with the start or stop of the rut. In my opinion, the temperature has a lot more to do with us seeing rut activity during daylight hours.

Who told you this? What's their supporting data?

I think other factors such as weather and hunting pressure affect the amount of daytime rut activity. I believe many hunters mistake this for a slow rut. Hunt your normal rut tactics and put in time in the woods. Good luck!

Was in a local bowshop and some guy was talking about some crazy moon cycle as well. He also had about 3 teeth. Lets just say take everything you hear with a grain of salt

On 16 OCT 2010 I took a 6 pointer in the morning who hit my sent trail from 38 yards and followed it right under my stand. That evening I sat in a different location and waited 30 min for my doe to come into range due to being mounted. Imidiatly after she was stuck the buck put his nose to the ground and started following my scent trail right to a friend of mines' stand where he took a 20- yard shot. The week prior to that I watched as a ten pointer was chasing a doe about 70 yards from me and later that same day I had a spike walk my scent trail without care that I was in a tree 5 yards from him and 30 ft up. I would say that the rut is in right now. I have heard that there will be three different ruts this year in my area. I don't know how much truth there is to this but at this rate the season is looking great.
