That said - 250k each means that a whole lot of chicken farmers around here have over a billion dollars buried in their fields.

You have free range chickens you will have losses, eagles, fox, raccoon, coyote, dog and cats. Just because it sounds like a good idea does not make it a sustainable idea. When I raised pheasants and chickens the outdoor runs were covered with nets, otherwise you lose birds anybody with a brain can see it.
yup, even the DNR facility that used to raise pheasants for the put/take hunts had the netting over the huge pens ...
