#1) Are you from Alexandria? (my hometown)
#2) This controversy takes place where I live now!
#3) Don't live in an HOA neighborhood if you don't want to obey the rules...

I agree but, apparently there are other non-conforming signs that are allowed. Rules should be for everyone, not selectively enforced.

    very true

This is why I hate HOAs and will never live in an HOA neighborhood. My artist neighbor has some pretty absurd sculptures in his yard that would make an HOA president eye's bleed.

Hooker, I live in Jonesville but worth just north of Alex in Pollock.

I understand that folks should read the rules of HOA before living there and abide by them. The thing that bothered me was the fact that other signs (real estate and contractors) are allowed. I can somewhat understand the real estate signs but if building contractors can advertise then these parents should also be allowed to be patriotic and support their son/troops in their own yard.

I consider myself very patriotic and loyal to our country and this just struck a nerve with me because of the nature of the sign.

And then to turn around and file a lawsuit to me is a waste of time and money. Heck, sit down and talk to the people explain to them they are violating the HOA rules and maybe give them a certain length of time that they can display and it has to come down after a certain date. Both sides would win.

Real estate and contractors do not abide by the HOA rules. Those signs are understandable.

That is all well and good, but they signed the contract.

I agree that it could have been handled better, but if the sign was about something not so sensitive, or something you did not believe in, you would not feel so strongly in favor of the homeowner. The HOA is supposed to be an indifferent "governing" body in these neighborhoods.

If the goal of the HOA not allowing signs is to keep the neighborhood clean/clutter free/visually appealing then those RE agents and contractors shouldnt be allowed to display either.

Yes, the nature of the sign and what it stands for has A LOT to do with the way I feel.

I also grew up in the middle of a soybean field with no neighbors. Even in college, bought a trailer and found land to rent with no neigbors that were visible. I can pee off my front porch now, LOL. I am not up to par on the rules and regs of housing authorities.

Well the goal of the HOA is probably to not have many empty houses as well. And contractor signs are used so delivery trucks and other contractors are able to find the site locations. I understand completely why those signs are allowed.

Which I completely understand. But I also like to think of things objectively and not come to conclusions based solely on my personal beliefs or emotions.

This thread was disappointing. Usually, with a title like that, someone spouts off about something really lame and then we call all indirectly mock him/her about it. But this one, the whole thing sounds petty. I can understand why it would tick someone off.

That leads me to believe there is more to this story. There almost always is when something sounds ridiculously one-sided. Yes, rules are rules, but the people with the sign really sound like the victim here, and many times that isn't the case. I'm guessing there is some history here between the family and the association. I would also guess that history isn't so great.

Sorry to disappoint you Vito, LOL!

Since posting this I have read some of the comments here and elsewhere. I was frustrated because of my feelings/beliefs for OUR great Country. Not being to put that sign up was a slap in the face, in my opinion.

HOWEVER, as I thought about it a little more I understand the rules and regs of the HOA a little more. I had no background on any of that since I have never dealt with or lived under those guidelines. How long have they displayed the sign? Has the HOA let others display signs and suddenly tried to stop this family? Has the family had other run ins with the association where they brought attention to themselves?

Just "chewing the fat" a little bit on this one! Thanks for the opinions and healthy debate guys.

They set a precident when they allowed school pep signs in the yards. I hope the courts hand the HOA their butts in a sling.

I agree with Iowa Veteran. Yes, it is against the policy, but someone else set a precedent for it.

There was no mention on whether or not the housing authority was aware of the other signs, or that there wasn't some special permission given to place those signs. It is obvious that this family did not in fact first ask as to whether or not they could place the sign.

As to why they got in trouble, it said that they received letters and emails about it. That means the neighbors turned them in.

Just a tiny taste of what my boys got when they came back from Vietnam. I think the home owners association should be ashamed. Probably some damn do gooder peacenik in charge.... or he's 4 F or he's in the group "don't ask don't tell". What a crock of crap. I think everyone in the neighborhood should put up the same sign..."Our neighbor is defending our freedom". Hell, I'd paint it on the homeowners association presidents house for free.

David, that attitude was present from the Korean War up to 9/11. It went away for a while, but has returned in too many places. When I came home from basic in the early 70's, people who claimed to be my friends in high school were asking me what it was like to be a baby killer now. We were treated as 2nd class citizens while I was active duty, and now that I'm retired, we get treated the same way by the government.
