It's all over the news today. Look for the laws to be changing on kids hunting privilages soon. http://www.ktvb.com/news/regional/stories/ktvbn-aug0408-hunting_fatal_accident.13e8ad3a.html
Wow, that is a very sad story. It is amazing to think that somebody could mistake a human for a bear at 120 yards in the wide open. PA laws state that an adult must accompany any hunter under the age of 16... sounds like it would be a good rule for every state. I not only feel bad for the family/friends of the lady who was killed, but also for the young boy who killed her.. that is something that will stay with him forever.
Such a sad story, no good could come of this. But it might not be that hard for a young hunter to mistake this lady for a bear in the fog and rain, especially if he was not using a scope.
It is definately a rough situation for all involved. You really do have to feel bad for both families. But I cannot feel too sorry for the kid that pulled the trigger. How can a woman in a blue rain parka look like a bear? It's something he will have to live with the rest of his life. I don't know if I could live with that.
This is a very sad story, I don't really get how you could mistake a lady for a bear in the open but things happen I guess, I hope this doesn't hurt the younger hunters of America.
Looks like this happened about a year ago. There is NO excuse whatsoever for a human to be mistaken for an animal. NONE! This kid probably just shot because he saw something move. Every spring here in VA someone is shot/killed because a "hunter" thought they saw a turkey. I don't get it and never will.
I agree with BM, youth hunters NEED to be accompanied by an adult like they are required by law to do here in PA. I know even by myself in my early hunting career, I wouldn't ever shoot at anything that I couldn't positively identify, but it's still good to have a RESPONSIBLE mentor along.
I had already read about this story a while ago.Fog and rain, the kid had a scoped rifle .270 I believe with a very low power scope. An enormous tragedy for everyone involved.Especially so for the poor woman who lost her life.
i agree with all! i remember being young hunting thinking everything was a deer but for it to lead to this?????????? tough one! what do yall think will happen, if anything to the 14yr old?
I agree 1000% You should not even be shouldering the gun until you know your target and beyond. PERIOD!!!!!
Seriously Wow! Here is all that happens to the murderer. Teen sentenced for killing woman he mistook for bear 04:16 PM MDT on Friday, July 10, 2009 KING5.com Staff KING Pam Almli was fatally shot by a hunter who mistook her for a bear. MOUNT VERNON, Wash. – A 15-year-old boy found guilty of second-degree manslaughter for shooting and killing a woman he says he mistook as a bear will spend 30 days in juvenile detention. The boy from Concrete will also serve 12 months under supervision with counseling and perform 120 hours of community service. 40 of those hours must be spent teaching others about hunter safety.
Very bad situation indeed. I'm not sure I agree with the idea that kids under 16 shouldn't be allowed to hunt on their own. (with some limitations of course) A .270 is really, really pushing it, but lots of us (in the olden days) went out with .22's and shotguns for squirrels and such on our own when we were kids with no problems.
