We have a family farm a couple miles away. It's a couple hundred acres but it's fields only, there's no woods. Well every year he says how they'll be standing by the barn and a buck will come right up into the barn lot. So I got to thinking, There's a row of about 6 trees at the very south end of the property with a small lane leading to it. It's the only trees around for about a quarter mile. However, it's surrounded by corn fields and soybean fields with nobody near it. Well this afternoon I decided to go toss a cam out there and just see. I glassed down the lane and saw nothing so I start driving down, well sure enough, up from the bean field sprang a boomer! Probably a 150-160 inch. I saw him running a good ways so I decided to go ahead and put the cam up. Sure enough there was a HUGE area where they had laid the corn down for bedding and tracks all over. The biggest problem will be getting set up that close to a bedding area since there's little to no cover and only about 6 trees. Going to give it a shot though.
I would not put that cam anywhere near that buck bed. You know where he is now. Observe from a distance if possible and set-up outside his field of view in the afternoon to cut him off. Are there any elevation changes in that field where you might be able to crawl in or lay down and shoot him from the kneeling position?
I'm with VS.. screw the camera. You've had two visual confirmations of the deer already and you can't get any better intel than that.. no reason to throw a cam up and start stinking the place up. My advice.. hang stands (if at all possible) in the rain and only hunt the evenings.. but get in nice and early. Also.. try facing the stand away from the deer if you think he can view you too easily.. or/and hang lower to not give away your position by climbing high and letting him get a visual of you from his bed while you climb up. My guess is those trees are likely oaks.. so he'll be sticking around the first few weeks of the season fattening up.
The land is completely flat. The lane is completely straight. The trees aren't oak either. My grandfather saw the deer last year, but not this year. Just always talks about the time that he and the guy who farms it for us were at the barns talking and it came right up to the running tractor, paying no mind about any of the machinery or people. Just head down cruising for does. There were a couple trees that I could use my climber on, which is good cause I don't have any hang on lefts. My other thought it park at the end of the lane and glass. I can use the standing corn field as cover to get close. Not sure yet. I have a couple weeks left to figure it out. I don't see him sticking around after the fields are cut. After that he'll lose all of he cover.
Park a piece of equipment in the ''right''spot and use it as a stand/blind?How about one of those fake hay bail blinds? Put several pisces of equipment out? What the hell...u never know?
Great Idea! What's wrong with the barn? What an awesome tree stand. Just get it set up and do the NINJA WARRIOR creep AM before the crops are harvested...... or Better yet call your Farmer up and tell him to call your CELL PHONE!!!!! ASAP when he plans on harvesting the field. Let him know what you got going on!!!!! Thank me Later!
