Looks like I will have access to standing corn this year which is a big change from last year as the neighbors all had corn and all we had was wheat and rye. Anyways, I'm thinking about trying a corn stalk if the deer are not moving through the field entry/exit points that I have access to. The way I see it happening is to wait until a windy day and start 50 yards or so (assuming I can see 50 yards down the rows) from the edge of the corn and start walking perpendicular to the rows. Each row I would peak my head both ways to see if there is a deer bedded. If not, I quietly would take a step to the next row and peak up and down that row. When I would hit the end I would move 100 yards down and go back. If I would see a deer bedded I would step back a few rows then walk parallel to the rows until I could see the deer, make a little noise to get the deer to stand up and take the shot. Is this the correct approach? Has this worked for you in the past? Any other suggestions? Thanks.
never have tried it, have read up on it and it sounds like your on the right path for a good approach to trying it. Maybe on a slow day I will have to try it as well, it will be good exercise anyways right?
Yep, that's the way to do it. I forget which hunting video shows this but it is an old one and they use 5 people to protray it with each entering the corn after the preceeding hunter goes in about 7 or so rows and at a distance of about 50 yrds apart. That way they arn't shooting down a row with another hunter in the same row.
Everything seems right except the part about making a little noise so the deer stand up so you can shoot it. In any instance like that you would be shooting a deer that is looking right at you. A recipe for a deer spooking right off (especially a mature buck) or them ducking the arrow causing a miss or wounded animal. I recommend you just shoot em bedded. Better to shoot something relaxed and knowing they are safe then a potential problem.
Sounds like an adventure. I have always wanted to do that to but just never have. first seen it on the vid October Whitetails years ago!
It is a challenge for sure. I've done it numerous times and seen a few deer, just nothing I wanted to shoot... My advice would be to go as light as you can, because the more stuff you bring into the corn with you (like backpack) the more noise your going to make - plus it makes it easier to get through the corn. I generally just bring my bow/arrows/release, binos, range finder and maybe GPS.... Seems like you can see better kneeling, because the stalks are really blowing at eye level. I like to get low and use my binos to look as far down the row as I can. Amazing how many times I'll pick out a deer with my optics that just looked like a shadow or patch of weeds to the naked eye... Sometimes you can find an irrigation tract and follow that around which makes for easier walking... Most of the deer I've seen would have presented a pretty tough shot angle since they since tend to lay down the row (least most of the ones I've seen), so pretty much forget any type of broadside shot. About the best shot you can hope for is that the deer is facing away but that's still a tough shot with the corn stalks blowing etc... It is something fun to try though, especially when it's super windy... Good luck!
