I saw a nice 8 last night from stand. I was sitting in a stand in a saddle that has a couple of trails running through and over it. I was on the wrong trail but it gives me hope. I set this stand up where a trail comes from a creek crossing, ( I have a stand at the crossing too but the wind was wrong to hunt it), and up over the saddle. The other side of the saddle is a bedding area. My stand is as close as I want to get, about 75 yds, from the bedding area. I was keeping my eyes on the trail leading from bedding to the crossing when I caught sight of this guy. He is without doubt the biggest deer I've ever seen while bowhunting. I guesstimate him to be about 130. He was on a faint trail about 30 yards beyond the trail I set up on which put him at about 45 yds from me. I hung the stand where I did because of the amount of sign leading from bedding to the crossing. I didn't know the other trail was there until I saw him using it. I don't want to make too much commotion moving so I'll go back with a climber when the wind is right and try to get on this guy. After a frustrating October with only one deer sighting this has given me hope. ( I've come to hate that word! LOL!) On another note my nephew Tanner shot a doe with his Grandmother's SKS on Sunday morning. I only hunted Sunday evening because I had to sit with Tanner. His mom,(my SIL), wouldn't let him go alone. Hes 15 and has killed a deer before and several hogs on his own. but alas, she would not relent. It was great to be with him for his kil
Good luck Greg and I hope you bag that big buck. You definitely work hard and I hope you get onto that big boy. If you see him using that exact trail again, move your stand in and kill him.
It's a good time to be in the woods in East Tx Saw a new buck yesterday evening (tiny seven point) chasing a doe and yearling around. Thats the third buck in two weeks I've seen chasing/checking does. I hope you kill that big boy, that would be awesome
Good luck with the big guy. Great times with the nephew. It seems inherent in most women. They are over cautious when it comes to their children but it is probably a good balance to most of us males that sometimes become too nonchalant with teenage boys. I know this much for sure. Even though he has killed a few animals already, the fact that he is only 15 and has a limited number of memories so far, He will ALWAYS remember that hunt and and know his Uncle was with him.
