My son called me at 3:38 pm...he had just missed a doe, shot under her...he said "dad, I don't think my rest dropped out the way!" I said we will check it when we get home...by 5:05 I had 2 bucks chasing does all around me...of course the only shot I had was on the spike! but either way, it was a great hunt. I can't complain. as routine, I always take a couple of shots when I get home. Brady always thinks I am crazy, but I said it puts my mind as ease. so tonight he shot when we came home and sure enough his qad ultra rest was not dropping...I checked the timing cord and it had moved..my guess is it happened when he fell in the woods. so I set the timing and he shots about 10 -12 shots and was back in business! going all day tomorrow, hopefully he gets redemption
Funny story I bought my BAR with every intention of elk hunting out west, got hooked up with a spot for the next year, then my wife got pregnant against million to 1 odds still never made it elk hunting 29 years later.
LOl! oh well... at least you have it..by the way, I figured out what caused the whole pregnancy thing after my second child and stopped doing it!! lol
Then things took a turn for the worse. We got invited to hunt a really great property today. My son and I both had a great hunt this evening. we saw 11 different deer between us and i passed on a young 15" 8 pt. my son him as well. so we got to see some deer...now the bad part. at 2:30 he had a 4pt come in and give him a broadside 15 yd shot..he got the whole thing on his go pro. He shot, the deer bolted. I made him sit until dark, it's not our property and I didn't want to roam around looking for deer while others were hunting.. so after almost 4 hours I come to get him. We find his arrow about 20 yds from where he shot. so the arrow went almost all the way through. my guess is it got hung up on the fletching coming out. The arrow showed sign of a gut shot. there was spotty dark blood for about 30 yds. We stopped . Go back tomorrow and see what we can find. I am preparing him for the worst. So he missed yesterday due to equipment failure and today he just shot too far back.. it happens to the best of us. Hopefully I have some good news.
He is fighting hard. That IS success in my buck buddy. Great job on stopping the track and waiting. If it is any kind of liver and you didn't push him, you will find him.
Thanks Brett.. and yes, there are many things to count as success tonight. Seeing deer, getting to draw and shoot. teaching him to back out. Knowing what it's like to have a sleepless night...all part of learning. I do think it was much more gut than anything. The few liver hits I have had were decent blood trails, this one, even though I only went 30 yds from the shot was very poor. But I have seen them pick up pace the further you go.
You did great backing out. 30 yards is nothing, I often don't find any blood within 50 yards with a rifle. 50 to 75 tells the story in many cases. Rooting for you guys, hope the morning light shows good blood.
No luck fellas... never found another drop of blood. did several grid style searches. just didn't have much to go on. I have been there before. But he learned from this. He did well for the most part. Just a few inches too far back. It's a game of inches I told him. He's disappointed but not dejected to the point he wants to quit...in fact, he told me, "dad, I am just not ready for bow season to be over" we have about 2-3 hunts left. then my primary property will be a wash. Gun season starts and the deer hounds will be pushing deer until Jan.. talk about nocturnal movement!
