just wondering how many of you like to hunt deep, nasty, god-forsaken thickets that only a rabbit could get into for big bucks...both of my big 8-pointers came from such a place..for some reason they love places like that..

In my area if you can see 50 yards you are not going to see bucks

sota I absolutely agree, with all the hunting pressure my public hunting spot gets the only time I can hunt it is before muzzleloader and before rifle...and even then you have to set up in freaking briar thickets where you might..might, be able to see 20 yards ...and that's the only places you will find deer in my area....amish and morons with spot-lights...neither one is good for the deer populations around here

powerhawk I love swamps as well, a great big buck hide-away..my dad killed a monster buck in massachussettes back in the 70"s and he killed him in a thicket ...was just breaking daylight when he shot him...shame he never kept the rack..he was never into trophies or scores or anything like that..he says its silly...but keep in mind he is from the old-timers red checkered plaid hunting pants and jackets OLD OLD SCHOOL GROUP OF HUNTERS.im sure you guys know or did know old timers like that

I always had a hard time figure out how to hunt these swamps/thickets though. Do you cut shooting lanes orrr? stuff is so thick that i don't see it possible to get a good clean shot at a deer.

So seriously, how do you guys hunt swamps/thickets?

I took my ladder stand down this year and refurbished it. Last week I set it up in a new spot on the property - in a real nasty thicket. There are more briars, pricker bushes, wild berry and thorn apple spikes than I am accustomed to. It seemed like every year in the past a buck would 'materialize' from near that area. After that, they would escape down the mountain without ever getting close to my old location. Hopefully this year I'll nail one in that nasty thicket :nana:

its ok to trim shooting lanes in a thicket nissen121523....just keep in mind one very very important thing..big old bucks call big old nasty thickets HOME. YOU MUST DO YOUR TRIMMING AT A TIME AFTER SEASON IS OVER OR SPRING/ SUMMER..NEVER during hunting season..that way the deer can get accustomed to all the changes..a big buck is smart enough to PICK UP ON ANY TWEAKS TO HIS HOME..thats like you being gone a few days and your neighbor sneaks on your house and rearranges all your pictures and furniture...YOUR GOING TO NOTICE IT!!!!!.....I hope this helps you bro

Stand I'm going to hang Sunday I'm going to call the blood bank because you'll donate at least a pint getting to it. I've got some boars hide chaps I wear for rabbit and bird hunting. I'll be wearing those to this stand every time in.

Thickets are great. Just be on your toes because they will be on you before you know it

I hiked a mile into some of the most horrid brush today to see what it has to offer. Set two cams out. There definitely is action back there. Some nice bear tracks and good deer. Found one area I'd call clearish, meaning I could walk without branches touching me for a few steps, and one "clearing" an arm span wide from a tree uprooting and three trails converging. Curious to see what the area has to offer. I know the potential around has been good. It took nearly an hour for the mile, and it was a beating, so it'll take something pretty nice to pass up usual short walks to other stands for it

I found an undiscovered thicket (undiscovered by me anyway) this past shroom season. I found a few pounds of shrooms in there and a lot of deer sign. I may try a pop-up blind in there a few times this fall. It's a tangle of hedge, locust and cedar ringed by old coal dumps....just thinking about it makes my heart pitter patter.
