I have an air compressor that I originally purchased as a gift for my dad. After he passed away I got it back and have it in my shop on my homestead. I'd say it is 15 years old if that. It is a Porter Cable and I've always had good luck with their tools. Recently it started tripping the breaker on start up. Not wanting to invest money in a new one, I took the covers off after doing some research online. I thought maybe the capacitor(s) were bad. When I got the 2 capacitor cover screws off a couple pieces hit the floor. The bottom of the cover has two locating pins to keep the cut out switch in place. That piece was completely broken off from the cover. Further inspection revealed that one of the tabs that holds the switch in place was also broken off. Broken cover repair: grooved out with a dremel tool and JB welded. Switch assembly repair: Bolted through the cover to hold in place. The switch is activated by a centrifugal disk that opens the switch when the motor is up to speed. After cobbling things back together the air compressor is working again. I had the the things to make the repair on hand so the cost so far is -$0-. During my research I found that the motor I have is obsolete and I cannot find the plastic cover anywhere. A direct replacement motor is going for around $300. I believe that is what I paid for the compressor when new. If this breaks down again I will cobble something else together until I run out of ideas. Game on. I should have put this in the rant thread but I didn't want to take up too much space.
Have 2 broken compressors in my garage/ shop, bought a 3rd to get by till I Frankenstein the 2 broken ones together to have a shop compressor again, the new 1 is a pancake Porter cable , has issues keeping up with air gun.
What type of gun are you using? Impact, Brad, Finish, or pin nailer? I have a 6 gallon porter cable that I run at 125 psi for my nail guns and I can usually get about 40 shots before the tank refills. I use my compressor every day at work. Never heard it being an issue of not keeping up.
Impact, can remove 2 lugs and then have to wait for air to catch up, even back in the day, had to wait on compressor when doing any framing. Agree no problems when using for finish nailing.
Lol! It was meant as more of a diy motivational post. Might save someone some money. BTW, 3 photos does not constitute a Rancid Crabtree post! Sent from my SM-G981U using Tapatalk
Hell Rancid would fill a whole page of instructional tidbits and pics before the first reply was ever made....
