Been looking at the thermacells. With this wet hot summer in the east the mosquitoes are terrible. Any thoughts on what model to get and do they work well or is there something else out there better? Read mixed stories about them some work some don't. Any feed back would be great.
I’ve had one for years. It works OK when I remember to get fuel and pads. Also have a Bug Tamer jacket. Works great and I don’t have to buy fuel or pads.
Thermacell definitely a big yes from me. I have used one turkey and deer hunting with great success. In a tree stand I just hang it on a branch, turn it on and I am good. Can't see any negative impacts with the deer.

Works amazing in the tree deerhunting or in the marsh duckhunting. In my experience it works better than OFF. Just keep it under you and you'll be good.
Will not hunt early season without it. It's great for sitting around the campfire or while sitting on the patio at home too.
I love them. Did have one where the igniter quit working after one year. There are videos on youtube how to repair them. I also bought the battery powered one this summer for camping. Worked pretty well once I figured it out. It charges with a standard Droid cord so you can charge it anywhere. That one will probably be with me in my ground and box blinds.
I don't usually need it in all my stands during the early season. Usually depends on how damp the area is or proximity to water - obviously. But I always carry it with me just in case.
I won't leave home without mine. Definitely worth it's weight in gold to keep any bugs at bay during the warmer part of the season.
Thermacells are unbelievable!!! I don't hunt early season without having one in my gear bag. The moment I was convinced that it was worth every penny was hunting black bear in Ontario. The bugs were terrible, but when the thermacell was running I had no issues. However, once the repellent mat ran out I could instantly tell as the bugs would swarm me until I changed out the mat.
I was set up in a drain in December on public land one year with a cutover on either side of me. The sun came out that afternoon and the mosquitoes commenced to munch on me. I started trying to fire up my thermocell and it wouldn't start. Pretty soon, I'm no longer concerned with being quiet and woodsmanship and I'm clicking the thermocell starter like I'm sending a morse code signal. I gave up and started spraying Repel with 40% deet when all of a sudden I started hearing a similar clicking sound coming from the cutover on my right. Basically, I'd been signalling to the wild hogs in wild hog cutter language, "BEWARE...DANGER" and they started clicking back at me "THANKS FOR THE WARNING...MY SOUNDER IS STAYING PUT IN THESE BRIARS." I didn't see a thing the entire afternoon. Moral of story is its great to have TWO thermocells in case one dies on you. You definitely need at least some spray as back up.
Absolutely on thermocell. Just remember. They usually take some time to start working. They aren't instant defense. Give it a few minutes and mosquitos are gone.
