Britney could have shot a doe last night as 2 does and a fawn walked right by her within 6 yards. She has her mind set on shooting a buck though since she already shot a doe earlier this fall. She did very good as we weren't in very tall cover ( cattails ) and I make her shooting lane over sized to increase her shot opportunity. I figured she would get busted but she didn't. We had the makings of a great evening hunt. Steady, light wind and does/fawns all around us. Last count, there were 11 with most being does. Apparently nobody informed the bucks that they are suppose to be chasing them or at least checking them out this time of year. We didn't see a one. Brit got to see a B&C skunk wander out of the cattails. He was big !! We saw a P&Y skunk when we got home. Looks like I need to set a live trap in the yard. I've seen him 3 times now running around the yard at night in this past week. Gonna try the tarp trick again after I catch him to see if I can get him out of the yard in the live trap without getting sprayed. Last time I shot a skunk in town... I had most of the people in town driving around to see was the shooting was about. Suppose I shouldn't have used the 270 but it was handy. Oddly enough most of them weren't surprised it was me doing the shooting. Most just drove down to see what I killed. The few that were surprised... were informed by the others that if they had a critter problem to call me. I would get rid of the problem. Tim
Did anything show up at the scrape then ?? Brit rattled in her first buck last night at last light. Was just a little guy but exciting for both of us all the same. Probably will pull her from school on Wednesday so we can get another day of hunting in before rifle season. We saw a really nice buck last night running the other side of the property. Need a SE wind to hunt him. This afternoon I am heading into a spot where a beast lurks nearby. He also showed himself last night the last 15 minutes of daylight. Gonna be tough trying to pull him out of his spot and on to land I can hunt. I need him to come 250 yards. Not much hope but got to try. Tim
Good Luck to you and your daughter! Very cool of you to pull her out of school. What a great dad/daughter memory she will carry with her forever!
I would like to think I killed this doe with my superior hunting skills, but a flock of turkeys spooked her over in front of me. I shot a tad high.
