Seems like the sky has been falling since 1776, I remember my grandparents and parents feeling the same way as i do now, it's a cycle in many ways. As for politicians and wall street people there is just no penalties for being crooked, and need to be jailed for life instead of a few years and then left to the money they stole from you and i. as for wall street why isnt anyone in jail ? I think the gov does not have a clue Something is going on that is different ,there is a line at the gun shop and stores cant keep shells on the shelf?
And now we are taxing the **** out of those people that had that work ethic and made something for themselves. What's that teaching our young?
History repeats itself.. and will continue for our nation as well. Sooner or later there will be a revolution.. and its a good thing.. not a bad thing. As far as any country failing... it too is a good thing... change brings about new ideas.. and throughout human history those ideas have brought about new and greater nations. It will happen again. Only question should be.. who's side will you be on. Our governments... or our countries. And... will you be able to decipher between the two when its time? It probably won't happen in our lifetime... maybe not in our childrens.. but history repeats itself. Nations... empires... all must be rebuilt once they get too big for their britches.
I largely think that the reason that your initial statement is true is due to people NOT calming down.
Between the ever increasing spread of terrorism and multiplying cells across Europe (yes you can draw parallels between that tensions growing in Europe during the latter part of the depression) and the Middle East, the nuclear threat with Iran and North Korea, coupled with our current slew of domestic issues, I would say this is a fairly unique time period, but of course there are some similarities. Then again, I'm young, what do I know?:D
Let me just add, I'm not trying to sound arrogant, I'm just stating my thoughts. I haven't really been around too long to have lived through a lot of historical change/repetition. Maybe we are just going through a similar pattern of change. Regardless, let's hope we pull through.
A good book for all to read.....I read parts of it about 15 years ago I believe and it's relevance to our country's current plight is very important. THINK when you read some of the quotes below..... The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon Here are some quotes from the book: "In the second century of the Christian era, the Empire of Rome comprehended the fairest part of the earth, and the most civilised portion of mankind. The frontiers of that extensive monarchy were guarded by ancient renown and disciplined valour. The gentle but powerful influence of laws and manners had gradually cemented the union of the provinces. Their peaceful inhabitants enjoyed and abused the advantages of wealth and luxury. The image of a free constitution was preserved with decent reverence: the Roman senate appeared to possess the sovereign authority, and devolved on the emperors all the executive powers of government. During a happy period (A.D. 98-180) of more than fourscore years, the public administration was conducted by the virtue and abilities of Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, and the two Antonines. It is the design of this, and of the two succeeding chapters, to describe the prosperous condition of their empire; and afterwards, from the death of Marcus Antoninus, to deduce the most important circumstances of its decline and fall; a revolution which will ever be remembered, and is still felt by the nations of the earth." Chapter 1 "That public virtue which among the ancients was denominated patriotism, is derived from a strong sense of our own interest in the preservation and prosperity of the free government of which we are members. Such a sentiment, which had rendered the legions of the republic almost invincible, could make but a very feeble impression on the mercenary servants of a despotic prince; and it became necessary to supply that defect by other motives, of a different, but not less forcible nature; honour and religion." Chapter 1 "It is scarcely possible that the eyes of contemporaries should discover in the public felicity the latent causes of decay and corruption. This long peace, and the uniform government of the Romans, introduced a slow and secret poison into the vitals of the empire. The minds of men were gradually reduced to the same level, the fire of genius was extinguished, and even the military spirit evaporated." Chapter 2 "To resume, in a few words, the system of the Imperial government, as it was instituted by Augustus, and maintained by those princes who understood their own interest and that of the people, it may be defined an absolute monarchy disguised by the forms of a commonwealth. The masters of the Roman world surrounded their throne with darkness, concealed their irresistible strength, and humbly professed themselves the accountable ministers of the senate, whose supreme decrees they dictated and obeyed." The Germans, in the age of Tacitus, were unacquainted with the use of letters; and the use of letters is the principal circumstance that distinguishes a civilised people from a herd of savages incapable of knowledge or reflection. Without that artificial help, the human memory soon dissipates or corrupts the ideas intrusted to her charge; and the nobler faculties of the mind, no longer supplied with models or with materials, gradually forget their powers; the judgment becomes feeble and lethargic, the imagination languid or irregular." "A people who still remembered that their ancestors had been the masters of the world would have applauded, with conscious pride, the representation of ancient freedom, if they had not long since been accustomed to prefer the solid assurance of bread to the unsubstantial visions of liberty and greatness."
There has always been terrorism it has just had different names. The nazi party used terrorist tactics very effectively. The nuclear threat is relatively new but, yes you may be too young :D, we had drills in school where we would hide under desks LOL in event of nuclear attack from russia. We have always had domestic issues but that is because of our wonderful (no sarcasm, i mean wonderful) system of governance. Look back into the civil rights issues of the 60's. I would suggest that those times were much more intense than what we are going through today. People were actually being killed, beaten, physically threatened, etc.
We have, and will, always pull through because our country is made up of citizens just like you . Think about it.
