Christine and I were both at the park again to bowhunt yesterday morning.. Christine to get try and get her second 2011 buck or a mature doe and my self to get a mature doe.
Christine hunted her great ground hunting spot and I headed to the other end of the property to one of my favorite spots called 5 trees ( I have killed 11 deer from this tree over the last a few years )
Christine setup on a doe that had her scent pegged when she was ground hunting the previous hunt ... except this morning she had a suprise in mind for the deer, she took the climber and got up in the same tree with the camera and camera arm ready to record the hunt. The doe came in Christine said very cautious looking and starring at the spot at the base of the tree where she had pegged Christines scent from down wind on the previous hunt. To the does suprise Christine was 12 ft or so up the tree waiting for her this time with the camera rolling.
Christine told me " That Doe was to smart to let her live " ;)
The entrance hole on her doe was impressive to say the least !
And SHE GOT IT ALL ON VIDEO... I cant wait to see the film!

I sat in my climber with the wind not cooperating as usual and started to think I was gonna get skunked due to the wind.
Until I spotted a doe and her fawn at 35 yards coming from the north east. When the doe got to 30 yards and broadside I meeped to stop her and I took the shot through some small twigs about 6 yards in front of me, really thinking I could thread that arrow betwwen the twigs... NOT... I nailed a twig squarly and it deflected my arrow and it buried in the ground 5 feet short of the doe. The doe to my suprise ran right to me on the side of the tree that had my camera arm mounted to it. She is now about 10 or 12 yards so I came to full draw again on the doe and couldnt shoot since my stabilizer was hitting the camera arm and was blocking my shot , now the doe is looking up at me and I think the jig is up... NOT.. she decided I was nothing and wanders off to 27 yards . So I again come to full draw on her but the camera arm is still blocking my shot again " At this point in my mind I am really cussing the camera arm and my 12 inch stabilizer that is hitting the camera arm "
They the doe changes her mind and trots back over to me and once she is right in front of me at 6 yards, I am in shock cause I cant believe she has come back again " I'm thinking man ..... how dumb is this deer ? " I MEEP at her to stop her and she stops broadside slightly quartering away with a tree covering the majority of her vitals but just enough vitals were left exposed to be a lethal shot, I shot and the arrow blew right threw her and she didnt go over 21 yards and staggered and then tipped over dead.
I told Christine " My Doe was to Dumb to let her live "

Congrats to you both on fine late season does. I gotta ask but you start off with Park? Is this a state park where Deer are use to
humans to a certain extent? I've had this happen to me regardless on private lands to and it just don't seem to reason but
I am glad they make these mistakes. :-)

    Congrats again,
    T

Yes, it is a park owned by the University Of Illinois where we are 35 preselected bowhunters allowed to bowhunt for the purpose of herd reduction , when they started the hunt back in I think it was 2004 the parks deer herd was extremely overpopulated to the extent the the overbrowsing was very apparent.

And Yes and No, the deer seem fine with humans in the park and tolerate them very well as long as they are in vechicles or on the walking trails but they dont tollerate us in the woods off the walking trails and have the same flight instinct from humans in the woods.

Just for some comic relief ;)
Ya thats what we need... like a hole in the head ... LOL
Neither one of us cares to be on camera much... maybe we could be the stunt doubles that actually make the shots ... Oh wait that wont work since i missed that doe on the first shot.. then I nominate Christine to be the stunt double, payback time Christine ... welcome to life under the microscope. HEHEHEEEEE ;)

Congrats. You two ladies know how too put them down!!!

I have a couple of the smart ones on my property. They busted me when my big buck was at 27yd and closing. Not happy about that one. If I could nail down exactly where they are, I'd shoot them both tomorrow.

Peak, Wait till you see the kill shot Christine go on video... ITS AWESOME!
She did a great job filming it and it was Christines 1st self filmed bowkill on film:), I wish my 1st selffilmed Bow kill would have come out on video half as good as hers did.
Im working on getting it on the computer and edited and hope to have it done for her soon.

The video is not awesome.. but the deer is on camera. The bolts on my camera arm are loose so I'd push the camera over with my elbow and it would start to swing back over again due to not being perfecty level. I also couldn't really tell where the doe was going to go so I had the camera zoomed out. Not sure if the deer will be more than a brown dot. Plus the shot angle is not ethics-police approved. ;)

The real challenge is trying to get the video off the darn camera. I've never tried to do it and I didn't have a cable to give to Deb and now she's trying to buy a firewire for it.

Anyhow, it was a good morning. I think that doe busted me twice before so I really wanted to do her in. I rarely get busted so I take it kind of personal. :D

I was holding the phone in my hands to text Deb that I had a doe down and I got her text that she had just gotten one. Sweet.

When I started hunting out there four years ago there were 65 hunters. Now we're down to 35. They even started with 55 this year but by time season started 20 had dropped out of the program. I swear it's not me... They say it's because the hunting isn't worth it, and because Deb kills all the deer. heh heh heh.

Oh, and I'm working on making Deb even deadlier... Yesterday her and Louie were smoking paper targets with my AR.
