Went out yesterday and put out my camera & Big & J Cube . While I was there I decided to go ahead and hang my loc-on ( Ol'Man Roost ) , I had installed the Treestand Buddy on this stand and man did it make hanging this stand way easier . I use the Rapid Rails to get into my stands , and on this one I have 6 of them to get the height I wanted to be at 24' .. Hunted out of this tree last year and killed 5 from it , after seeing the deer sign in there yesterday , it should be another good season on this property ( Golf Course ) There was 4 of us bowhunting it last year and we killed 31 deer off it .
i dont think you need to hang that high. i use 4 lonewolf climbing sticks with my lone wolf stand to 14+ feet high and had deer coming under my stand. i used to hang 18 feet or higher. But 14 and over 20 feet high doesnt make any difference to the deer. thats what i learn. .
It's all about cover. Which in that tree it doesn't look like there is much. I have sets 8 feet off the ground all the way up to 25 feet. Just depends on the cover. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
true. but if you got other trees concealing you. you should be fine. but i was in a situation where i had a young 6 point coming under my stand. it wasnt a brushy tree. but the tree trunk was a good size. so it didnt see me
theres also this. having too much brush covering you. as a bowhunter. its good that they wont see you as well. heres the bad. you cant draw your bow confortably, when a deer walks away to the point where youre at full draw. theres a brush covering you from letting the arrow fly to the animal. that doesnt help you all the time. to me id have some brush but if youre gonna hang 14+ feet high and theres no brush. id take the chance. if it was gun season. having lots of brush is good to me. but as a big bowhunter like myself, not alot or any.
Why so high? To be honest the highest I ever go is usually 15 feet. That tree in my opinion is a poor choice as well. You would stick out like a sore thumb. Get that stand in the middle of 3 trees or atleast a group of 2 trees for better cover. Sometimes single trees will work depending on your back drop but this one looks like you will stick out a ton especially when the leaves come down.
I get what you are saying, but without much cover around you need to sit higher. I'm not saying to have branches all around you in the stand. Need to make it easy to draw on the deer. But back cover is important. Many of my sets I put myself at certain heights where I get the most back cover. There is no right answer. Sometimes it's on the ground and other times it puts me at 25 feet. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I don't blame you for wanting to hunt high. I prefer all my sets to be at least 20' high. If there are limbs/brush in the way, I trim what I need to. You can definitely get away with more mistakes the higher up you are. Just make sure you're harnessed up and there shouldn't be any problems. Good luck this year.
Again , there are trees behind the one my stand is in & close to the sides of it , sun sets behind me as well .. once the leaves fall , I move a little deeper into the woods and use my climber , climbing up in a group of tree's .. I am hunting in a golf course near houses , I am set up at the end of a cul-de-sac ,so the pavement is only 20 yards behind my tree , deer funnel from my front and from my right through an acorn ridge that drops off to a creek .. Killed 5 from this very tree last year and not once got busted . Here is a view from my back side :
Found a picture of my setup from last year that better shows the cover .. I was using my Millennium M100 last year ...
If a setup seems to workout? Does it matter the height or amount of concealment? If it works, isn't it just preference at that point?
As long as you are not discovered by whatever animal you are hunting through sight or scent, I think whatever setup you have would be fine regardless of height or cover.
