Didn't chase deer with a bow this weekend, I didn't think they would move that go with the 80 deg temps. Did some goose hunting and turkey with the bow. Going out tomorrow if it's not raining then out this weekend. hope the big buck start moving a little. Keep after them guy's, the time is coming.
Going out tonight to the same place as last Tuesday when I encountered that nice eight point. Got to make something happen. The weekend was good for seeing deer. I was in the right spots, but just no shot opportunities. Saw one shooter buck 60 yards into the timber but on the neighbors side of the property line. This week things should start heating up a little.
We are definitely off to a slow start, but there is alot of hunting left. I really havent been out much as of yet, but that will change.
Good to see I'm not the only one that gets up early. I'm hoping to make it out this weekend, I have to get over this nasty cough first. My only other option is to get big medded up and eat cough drops like they're a fine cuisine.
Yep, I'm headed out tonight too. Me and a friend have been working a public spot really hard to try and pattern the deer there. We've seen them on occasion but hadn't found the right spot until last night. My buddy was in the stand last night and saw a big six pointer walk about 55 yards from his stand and it was followed by a few decent sized does. I'm hoping at least one of us gets the opportunity at a kill since we're both goose-eggs for the season so far.
Passed about a 110" seven pointer last night. Not what I'm looking for, but he played the part perfect for my set-up. Just need a few more inches though. Going back out again tonight. I'll be in a different spot. All hardwoods with lots of oaks trees and acorns. There should be some action. This is going to be my first sit of the year in this stand.
I've kinda been slacking so far this season. I've either been at school, out of town at my girlfriends school, or working at home so I haven't gotten any sits in yet. That will be changing this weekend though. My classes on Friday have been canceled so if everything goes as planned I will be getting 3 or 4 sits in this weekend. I plan on shooting the first doe that walks by and I've heard talk about a pretty nice buck that's been spotted in our area. I wish the leaves would start falling off soon to increase visibility a bit though!
Well I had a good sit last night. Had 4 antler less deer hang around my stand for over 30 mins all pass by inside of 20 yards. Then about 2-5 mins after legal light a two bucks appeared at about 55 yards, made there way up the ridge and passed inside of 25 yards. One was a fork the other was a smaller 8 pointer. Best night on the stand so far this season. Going back out Saturday mourning.
Sat out in the rain last night, didn't see a thing. Did some quick scouting after I packed up and I think found a spot a little closer to their bedding area. Maybe I'll get a chance on one of them come Friday night.
Opening day in Massachusetts tomorrow! 20 MPH winds with gusts to up to 40. Unfortunately it will be in the wrong direction but hopefully it will be blowing so hard it will help "cover" my scent. Not going to shoot that 9 from my living room so ill be out around 11 and will sit to dark. Wish me luck! Chris Sent from my Droid using Tapatalk
Well guys. I've been inside with the flu since Monday. I think we're getting pretty close to getting back out there. I can't wait to get out there and get something. Next weekend is looking like great weather in central Indiana and the following weekend I'm heading down south to hunt some Ohio River property. Eric, I have my hunter ed license now so I'm legal to go to any state park. Also, if you're interested, we should try and hit up ten mile creek in Illinois or some other public land within a days driving distance.
I woke up this morning feeling awesome. Think I'm finally over this junk. I went out this afternoon to check my cam in front of my stand. Sure enough, 2 really nice does came through yesterday morning at 8 am. Would have been perfect shoots. Figures. Building karma... building karma...
Ihad a good sit last night, had a doe anda spike come in,first two deer I have seen from the stand this year. 2 1/2 weeks til I leave for Kansas
So I had mass season wrong... It started today (the Monday after the 15th). I had it in my head all along it was the 15th. First year hunting in mass so I guess I should have looked a little closer when I bought my license. Looks like I'm waiting until next Saturday. I ended up driving to nh Saturday afternoon to hunt Sunday morning. Another really quiet sit and didn't see a thing. I decided to do some scouting and walked around for about an hour and a half looking for sign. I didn't see a thing. Then as I was exiting the woods I decided to check out the edge of the swamp that is below where I hunt. It looks like the deer are staying close the swamp now as its pretty dried up and it's about 3 acres of tall grass where they are bedding. I jumped one deer when I went to the edge. There are also acorns all along the side of it so they don't have to travel far. So here's my plan and let me know what you think. Next Sunday afternoon I'm going to move my hang on stand from the woods to the swamp edge. There is a strip of woods about 30 feet wide that separate a pasture from the swamp. I found a tree that looks pretty good right on the edge. Im going to cut the branches I need to cut, hang the stand, and let it cool down for 2-3 weeks. Any thoughts or advice? -Chris
I say just go ahead and get to hunting. If they notice the change at all, well by then it's too late. The problem I have is cutting way too much. 2-3 weeks may be a good time to wait, i'm just way too impatient.
I would only be cutting a path in. No branches need to be cut for the stand. I want to be able to get in there quietly so I need to cut a little path.
If you can cut it in the middle of the day when they're not moving that much, I'd hunt it as soon as possible.
I agree cut in the middle of the, or on a windy/rainy day to cover your noise. Put up a new stand yesterday in 25 mph winds I'll let it sit till this weekend. It's on a piece of land where people are around all the time. So a few days cooling will be good.
