My theory regarding feeding (as in like corn, apples, etc....not necessarily food plots) is that any buck that survives past a couple years did so because he learned that corn is really tasty after dark but it'll kill you if you eat it while the sun is out. The moment that first bang goes off in the woods big bucks won't touch the stuff until well after sunset. A couple years ago I had that theory put to the test. I had a stand on a field edge about 30 yds from a persimmon tree that I had a trail camera mounted on. There were 2 big bucks, a couple yearlings, and a bunch of does that would come by an hour after sunrise and half an hour before sunset every single day like clockwork. You actually had to drive/walk through that field anytime you wanted to get from one side of the property to the other so they were constantly seeing me walking and driving through there but they still came out like it was no big deal, they would just hang back behind some brush a little ways inside the treeline until you were gone. I had hunted the stand and taken a couple does that year but hadn't gotten a shot on a buck yet. One week I was gonna be gone so I told a buddy he could hunt that stand. A few days before he was going to hunt he went out midday and dumped a 50 lb bag of corn out. That evening my trail camera had shots of the 2 bucks and the rest of the herd coming out right on time followed by a shot of both bucks hauling ass back where they came from a few seconds later. There wasn't a single daylight photo of those bucks for the rest of the season after that. Lots of photos of them at 2 or 3 AM (which I hadn't been getting before) but not one single daylight photo. A few days later when my buddy hunted that stand he did manage to shoot a 3 pointer, but the adult bucks were gone never to be seen again. Learned a very important lesson that day; never let your idiot friends hunt your best stands. Also, confirmed my suspicion that the older wiser bucks got that way because they know that pile of food+sunlight=death.

The entire state of Minnesota is under a wind chill advisory AND a winter storm watch for the next 3 days. The light blue wind chill advisory is covering the dark blue winter storm watch. I’ve never seen it where the entire state has been under a watch, let alone 2. Should be a doozy of a storm this weekend.
