People who do not understand federal tax refunds and what they really are for most and "News" media who play words to keep them incensed for political purposes. What exactly are they saying? It is better to be overtaxed at a higher rate than overtaxed at a lower rate? So to "Losing" number one: Never depend on a tax refund as a predetermined income or "guaranteed entitlement". It is not, it is simply what you overpaid during the course of the year being returned to you without any interest attached. If you absolutely need to use it as an interest free(loan to government) savings plan and need it to be bigger, then fill out another W-4 and there is a box for additional withholdings per pay period. Get paid every other x-day you will have $1,080 on top of your normal refund if you have $40 additional taken out, $960 if you get paid twice a month or $2080 if paid every week. Problem solved, although stupidly. Also note the color of your state, if blue you can almost certainly be assured that your state income tax or another state tax will be raised/created to get the newly acquired revenue from paying less federally, because you won't notice it missing.
