Thursday I went up on the mountain with my oldest son. He has horses so we road in a few miles. I am not a HORSEMAN and I can tell you right now my tail end is still recovering. This next weekend I got two weeks in the stand:bow:

I'm not much of a horseman either. I never really cared for the idea of riding horses, but my wife is a horse LOVER. We had horses in Tennessee. Of course, you can't have just ONE horse, so we had two. I actually rode with her quite a bit but I never did get comfortable with it.

Once we were riding in a field that had been tilled recently. The girth on my wife's saddle worked a little loose so I dismounted and cinched it up while she was still mounted. I went to get back on that stupid mare of mine, Rhythm. Got one foot in a stirrup and she started to walk forward. No problem, right? I'll just do the cowboy hop and throw myself right up. I was almost on the saddle when she jumped forward.

Me being the idiot I was I didn't abort and tried to carry through. I ended up on her hindquarters behind the saddle. That mare lost her mind. She reared and then bucked and my wife swears she sent me a good nine feet up in the air. I saw the ground coming and I tucked and hit HARD. Lucky we weren't on a paved road.

It knocked the wind out of me and I rolled up an was trying to suck air into my deflated lungs and I could hear my wife saying over and over, "Oh S***! Are you okay". I'm on my hands and knees still trying to get air back in my lungs and at the same time I'm waiving her off to try to tell her to hush and that I was going to live.

I finally got my breathing back to almost normal and stood up. I knew I was hurt but I didn't know how badly. Rhythm was about 25 yards away munching on grass and looking at me. I walked over to her, grabbed the reins, put them over her head, pulled back hard, grabbed a handful of her mane and got back on.

It was a painful mile long ride home. Later at the hospital I found out I'd broken two ribs and really bruised the others on my right side.

I hadn't even fully healed when I went on my last ride. We were almost home and the Chicago screw that fastened the rein on the right side of the bridle came undone and I no longer had control over that horse. Rhythm had wanted to go home all along and since I no longer had control she headed home - at a flat out run. That's the only time I've ever been on a horse at a flat out run. I was terrified. All I could do was yell to my wife that I was in trouble, hold the loose end of the rein up in the air so she didn't step on it and hang on to the cantle of my Aussie saddle with my left hand.

She blazed up the gravel driveway, through the yard, through the first gate, through the second gate and didn't slow down until she got to the stalls. She slid to a stop and to my credit I stayed in the saddle as she slid. I got off that horse and I've never gotten back on one. I don't plan to either.

    LittleChief ,

Sounds like you had quite the rodeo going. That is never fun. I always tell my son I would rather eat one then ride one. He has an older horse named Drago that's 23 years old I think. He is slower and just follows the other hose really well. He rides a mule and I rode her for a little bit. Mules have a different canter and are a little smoother ride. But just a little. We have pretty steep terrain here and coming down We would get off so my butt could have a rest. I only ride every couple years and I am thinking that may come to an end.

Bret and Haastyle congrats on the does!

I’m back home from Ohio and finally have service. It was a tough tough hunt with lots or rain and warm temps. With that said our group was on good bucks just about all week long. I played cat and mouse with a 145-150” 8pt for 2 days, 4 sightings, 3 of those coming in one sit but he would not cooperate.

I’m home and ready for the grind until opening day of hun season, November 15.

The time is here, keep on pushing. Good luck everyone!
