We have a cold front coming in later this week. But, my wife is really wanting to get out, so we will likely be sharing a blind and guess who will get the first shot that presents itself. lol On a bright note, she has no plans on shooting a doe, so I may get to add 50 points to the team score if all goes well.

I guess I’d better shoot this thing before I take it to the woods.

She gets the first shot?

Well, good luck to you both when you finally get out.

    I’m good.

Still dead-nuts on. 1” high at 75 yards.

The muzzleloader mentions have me dreaming of my future DREAM hunt in 2022. I get to touch my boots on the sacred whitetail soil that is Iowa. I swore I'd never do an outfitter, but Tom (Monsterraxx) asked me to join a group of his and while it is vastly more money than this guy could justify in a spur of the moment, it'll all be saved by the end of next for sure.

I've shot deer firearms so little it is sad really that I'm more confident me launching an arrow 60 yards than I am with my muzzleloader...LOT of shooting needs done.

My next most likely hunt would be Friday.

Friday I'm most likely gonna have little man go to daycare and hit the tree in the morning...if I do I'll be heading back to the stand I passed that 2.5 year old hoping one of the older bucks around slips up. Need to check a camera right there and midday will be as good as any time to do so.

@LittleChief that a CVA Accura? If so what is your load of choice?

Presently trying to see which Barnes it likes best with most likely 90 to 100 grains of Blackhorn powder

I'd like to hunt Iowa some day but I know that'll probably never happen. I'm not the best rifle shot myself. I'm a much better shot with a bow than a rifle, so the longest shot I want to take with my muzzleloader is around 100 yards. I think I dropped one last season at 110 yards.

If they get inside 100 yards I'm very confident with it. My hunting rifle is a 45-70, and it shoots the exact same bullet so the ranges are similar for it.

I wish I could shoot like my son in law. That boy should have been a sniper.

I've been dreaming of Iowa FOR YEARS...after this hunt happens I'm going to proabably build back points and try to do some DIY on public bow wise....but its always a chore for me to find the time away from family and I sense that is just gonna get tougher as the little man gets older.

It’s a Thompson-Center Encore. I shoot Hornady SST-ML Speed Sabots with a 250 grain bullet and three 50 grain Pyrodex pellets.

    It definitely rocks the woods.

I remember those days and sometimes I do miss them. Now, though, my kids can come hunt with me and they'll even drag my deer for me if they're there.

Now that I'm retired, all the kids are grown and gone and I have all the time in the world, what I don't have is that disposable income I used to have. It's all good though. I hunt some pretty decent spots. We don't have giants, but we do have some good deer.

Sorry, but yes she does get first shot on her Dad's place we bought. It was a year ago this week that she and I sat in a blind together and watched her Dad shoot his last deer before cancer took him away from us. I drove him right to the blind with an electric golf cart and helped him into the blind. It was all he could muster to just climb the three steps into the blind. She will be using his muzzleloader this weekend and we will be sitting in the same blind and hope to kill a buck from the same clover field that he planted. It will be a very bitter-sweet weekend of deer hunting for us. I may slip out on our other farms for a morning sit with the bow, but she gets the afternoon hunts for a few days. It's hard to believe it has been a year. I miss this guy so damn much. My own father passed when he was only 66 so Dave was my stunt-Dad for nearly 20 years and did an amazing job. Enjoy your families and the outdoors folks, tomorrow is not promised.

Sorry for the delay in replying. I was washing my truck for the first time in almost a year.

I was just joking Fletch, and there's no reason to be sorry at all.

    I had no idea.

I have to say I know almost exactly how you feel. Almost, because I never knew my father in law. He died before I met my wife, but my brother and I lost our Dad in 1990. It was tough the next few years going back to the same place we used to camp and hunt as a family. Thirty years on it still feels like something big is missing. Still, the tradition continues and my brother and I still go to the same area and we take along a new generation of hunters.

They say time heals all wounds, but I don't believe that. Over time you learn to live with the absence of someone who was a big part of your life, but the wound never heals.

I wish you both the best of luck, and I apologize if what I posted sounded callous. If I'd known I wouldn't have said a word.

LC, I did not mean to sound too serious. I am way thicker skinned than that. Lol. I know you well enough to know you are a great man and would never cause anyone a second of grief. Its all good!! And I agree completely with the healing process. We just find a way to move on. I am beyond blessed to be able to have bought his farm and cabin. I feel at peace there.

Well, my wife just informed me that she has a meeting Saturday afternoon in Des Moines and will not be back in time for an afternoon hunt. She is crushed that she will miss opening day of her early muzzy season. But, after taking my oldest golfing Saturday morning, I am going to hang and hunt one of our other properties. Golf and bowhunting, sounds like the perfect day to me!

I woke up at 3:30 am after a restless night.

I’m not feeling exactly great so I’m going to push my trip back a day just to be safe.

I’ll just spend the day today relaxing.

Man I love muzzleloader hunting. I spent years working with Barnes Bullets and Blackhorn 209 as a product tester, and got probably way more involved than my wife wishes I had lol. We used to be limited to shotgun use in SE Wisconsin so the best bet was to use the smokepole to gain some distance. Testing sabot types, sabot weights, powder types, powder weights, primer choices consumed me lol. Anyways it definitely helps open another doorway to hunting in the states.

You will love going down to Wicked Whitetail Outdoors Ty. The owners are family friends, and the main owner (Mike) knew my dad growing up. I hunted with them since 2004, and loved the camp, food, and the hunting was always phenomenal. I am actually going down with them this fall with my bow tag so hopefully will be tagging out on a good one, but if not the camp is always a blast. The caliber of deer those guys have is out of this world. If you ever need some tips on perfecting that muzzleloader group I'd be more than happy to talk.

Man if this ain't the truth! I lost my dad four years ago when he was 59 to some complications after a heart surgery. Every hunt is certainly different, and I take much more time sitting and reminiscing than I ever thought was possible. Each deer since has definitely played harder on my heart strings than ever before, but knowing I got my own little boy to teach everything I was taught by my old man certainly helps. The only thing that is tough is my dad didn't shoot does (not that he was against it), and had never shot a doe with his .7mm mag that I now use for rifle season. So I tend to switch to my .260 when I need to kill a doe so he doesn't prank me or haunt me in my sleep lol.

I submitted the buck, I'm over screwing with it, I'm ready to get back to hunting.
