Oldcarp Great job you and your son did helping her get her 1st buck. Exciting way to hunt when you can spot and stalk animals.
You all will have memories of that hunt.

As I learned last year my fire stand at my place may be less hot than it used to be due to the landscape business operation nearby…some days they’re quiet other days lot of commotion.
However, when the deer are on my property that spot with east winds is DYNAMITE, and is where I’ve taken three bucks since 2016, averaging right around 148…east winds predicted the end of this week nearly three days straight once cold front hits.

I may do an all day sit or two if I can get away from work and see what happens.

Brett - I haven’t forgotten. I should have an answer tomorrow on whether my back-up plan for you will be okay.

@tynimiller your last update certainly gave me a good laugh. Keep up the good work sir! With that said it is now STORY TIME!

Last Thursday started like any other day with me getting up, helping my kiddos get dressed for school, and pounding a half pot of coffee. Sitting at work looking at the weather I knew that Thursday would be the only day with low wind speeds as we headed towards a very windy weekend. From there I figured I'd text my wife to see her thoughts as having family time during the week is important to us and the kids. She responded and asked "Is it going to be too windy or too warm?" Which I responded with "No, calm winds and not warm". From there she gave me the go ahead to get into the stand.

Now my #1 hadn't shown up on cameras, but from conversations with my neighbors I knew he was moving around my property edges. I picked a stand that is set up between two bedding cells and on the north edge of my property closer to a neighboring cut soybean field using the south wind to my advantage. I started the walk up to my stand which is at the highest point on our property, which normally I leave for morning sits to utilize my thermals, but given the great south wind I snuck up to the stand. HOWEVER, as I stepped into the wood edge and precut trail I made for easy access I heard a loud crash and got my first look at my #1 who was just as big or even bigger than the pictures I had. My hopes for the sit went into the garbage rapidly, but figured it was still a good wind and you never know if he circles back so I decided to stick it out. I got in stand around 4:15 and waited to around 5:00 to hit the rattling antlers. After about a minute or so long sequence I put the antlers back on the hook and turned to my main point of interest.

As I glanced over the area I quickly saw a good buck coming in QUICKLY! I couldn't make out a rack, but since I usually stand most of the time on my sits I was ready. I put the camera on him and waited. After a bit the buck stepped out and what was about a great up and comer 120ish eight point. He walked in and browsed on some acorns while I kept scanning the downhill side from my stand. From there I then saw a wide framed buck thrashing some trees. Quickly I put my video camera on him to realize it was my #2 buck and oldest deer on the property. A buck I named Johnny Ringo (Ringo for short) from the GREAT movie Tombstone. The year prior Ringo sported a good 4 point right antler, but only a brow and beam on his left. Now he added width, brow height, and an extra point on his goofy side. Ringo was tearing up trees, making scrapes, and licking his lips. Clearly looking for a fight at the Z.H. Corral. Ringo walked up to 20 yds, but vitals were behind a tree. I started to make my draw, but forgot about the other eight point. He caught something, but nothing to make him nervous as he went back to feeding. As his head and Ringo's heads went to the ground I drew back and punched Ringo perfectly with a quartering to shot. He ended up running 60-70yds and toppling over. I hit the left lung, diaphragm, and liver. Always fun to bring my kiddos with for the track job, and got it all on film for the show I film for Boot-Trac Adventures. Now to sit back and hope my #1 stays sneaky until the WI gun season.

After yesterday afternoon’s sit with nothing moving I decided I wasn’t going to go back out until after this front passes, the temps drop and the wind shifts.

Therefore I’m kicked back in my recliner taking it easy with Elly May the Wonder Beagle perched on my lap and growling at any other dog who gets close.

we only got a couple inches at the house here and most of it is melted. The mountains got a foot to 15 inches. It is a good start but we need more snow
