Congrats on the nice gobbler Steve! Always nice to be back in the woods hunting. I have to wait to the 27th.

Thanks fellas! We can take three toms per season, I used to only bow hunt them, but a shotgun is just as fun. I'll probably take one more then break out the bow for bragging rights.
So, the hunt story was kind of cool as well, I had set up on a mouthy tom, but he flew down and got on a hen, of course, she lead him the opposite direction. So I wait 20/30min then start moving to the woods to put the sneak on them. As I come out the the little stream/low spot, I hear some hens, I figure they're just over the little hump so I break out the tom fan, well as I move forward, the two hens are still on roost (8am), so now I'm stuck, I stand up behind a tree to hide and just wait for them to hit the ground.
15min: Tom comes of roost, goes the wrong way.
30min: Still up in their tree, I take a little look over my left shoulder and damn if this guy isn't 30 yards from me...so there we are...nothing between us and my shotgun up against the tree. I'm stuck but he doesn't seem to figure me out, he goes behind a big tree, I got my shot gun up and level just before he peeks out.
Game over, not sure if he was just focused on the tail fan on the ground or what, but it all worked out. Glad to be able to start the season on a high note.
Now, I have to fit in hunting in between coaching baseball.

Fun times, good luck to you folks once you get opened up.

Went out to the West Desert to do a little camping. Saw around 40 deer or so. It was just nice to get out and enjoy the desert. We probably put around 100 miles on the side-by-side. My wife enjoys exploring the old mines and dugouts out there.

Good to see the team active fishing, camping, hunting.
I've been in the woods most days the last two weeks. tapping trees and boiling down maple sap. Kinda slow so far only 1 1/2 gals last week about 3 1/2 this week.
Most deer I've ever seen on my farm this time of year. North of my house around 30 some evenings. West and across the road about the same number. IMG_1743.JPG IMG_1740.JPG

I drove to my brother’s house in Flippin, AR yesterday and we hit Bull Shoals today for some big water bass fishing.

I caught 9 and kept the six biggest: 5 decent largemouth and one spotted bass. My poor brother didn’t catch a fish.

We caught and kept 5 rainbows on Sunday afternoon. A friend is going to smoke them on his Traeger. Last evening I planted 22 Chestnut trees on our cabin property. The nuts they produce are like deer candy. It will be a few years before they are big enough to produce. I have 25 more Chestnuts and 25 Persimmon trees coming later this summer to also put in. I am also going to add some fruit trees to the property. I thought it would be fun to have a mixed orchard of trees that would draw some deer into something different than they can normally find in the area. The clover is starting to green up nicely and there were 8 deer standing in one of the fields when I pulled in. I saw quite a lot of turkey tracks in the mud as I was planting the trees and look forward to season opening on Monday.

Little bit jealous of you guys with open water fishing and working in food plots planting trees.
Still some patches of winter snow here and snowing some every few days. Grounds still frozen.
    Tired of winter lol.

The ice is coming off of the lower lakes. So me and A handful of the grandkids decided to go do some open water fishing. The fishing was not fast or furious but we did catch a few.

I made the trip to my brother’s place at Bull Shoals lake and fished with him for two days.

The early morning hours were okay but both days the wind picked up and got crazy. My Tracker boat is only 17’ and I only have a 55# thrust trolling motor so fishing in whitecaps is TOUGH.

I managed to catch a limit of keepers the first day but my poor brother didn’t catch a single fish that day.

The second day he finally caught his first fish and we laughed so hard we almost cried:

He did end up catching a couple of decent fish the second day but I had a lot of fun on Facebook at his expense with the above pic.

Today was the opener of our turkey season. First really beautiful morning here for quite a while. I screwed up the alarm on my new iphone because I have always been an android user. So, my day started off at 5:57am instead of 5am and it was already full light when I got to my spot. I did not hear any birds, so I slipped along an edge below the crest of a hill and made it to a blind where I crawled out and put two decoys up. 20 minutes later I had a gobbler with 2 hens enter the far end of the field where the hens fed and he strutted for them for another 20 minutes. When the hens started to leave, I hit them with a slate call and they came on a string with the gobbler in tow and I smacked him at 15 yards with the Ravin R10.
