Personally I've never felt the itch to shed hunt. No attraction really there for me really. I love it when I find them in the Spring doing habitat work but honestly beyond that it is just not something I've ever itched to do.

Hey Team Haastyle, is there a ton of competition for sheds in Wisconsin, or just not the numbers? What is the fascination with Iowa for so many Wisconsin guys to come shed hunting? Again, not picking on you at all. I know that you were obviously on ground where you either owned or knew someone. That's cool and I have zero problems with that. We all have that right. But, honestly its a real problem around here. We have a guide from up there that tends to have people sit right on fences or even cross fences. A buddy of mine had to take down one of the guide's blinds on private property where he didn't belong. Is trespassing a big thing up there? Maybe his clients are some of the guys coming back to shed hunt??

I would agree with your comment about our dirtbags trespassing on land owned by nonresidents. In this area at least, nonresident ownership pretty much put the end to many guys deer hunting opportunities on private land. So, some of them just say screw it and go anyway. It's the reason I started buying up land when I did. I could see the writing on the wall and thank goodness I did. I guess I always figured we all have the opportunity to make sacrifices and buy our own ground.

I’m not hardcore into it. It gives me something to focus on when I am hiking. It is cool when we find elk sheds.

Our state is very mismanaged so the age structure is pitiful for I would say 75% of our state. Certainly SW Wisconsin and counties along the Mississippi River do well for older bucks, but overall we are yearling slaying state. In addition, our sections are very small which makes shed hunting difficult when you may have only a 40 to shed hunt that may house 1-2 bucks older than 3 1/2 years old. I am fortunate that I have been able to mold my property to have a larger winter herd so I can usually pick up more sheds, and also my job doing pond inspections in the spring time in suburban area helps. I will say though when we do get the big winter herds we definitely have to watch our property lines for any wandering neighbors.

I got my prize package yesterday! Thanks to all of you for letting me ride your coattails this year. I will carry my own weight next year. I already have my seed bought for Spring planting and will expand my plots and opportunities for this coming season. No reason we can't make it three in a row!

My retirement letter is typed and dated for Friday...come September I will have so much more time to hunt and so little committment to anything else. I echo Fletch by thanking you all for carrying me through a tough season.

When deer start eating my round bales, their getting hungry. Been cold but only around 12 inches of snow, so mild winter so far. 00007207.JPG IMG_1735.JPG

I got my package today. LC I am not for sure who to thank but thank them. I’ll be using that stocking cap ice fishing this weekend.

I’m not sure what I did to my back on the last trip to Arkansas but it still hurts as bad as it did the first day.

If it doesn’t improve soon I’m thinking a trip to the doctor may be in order.

I’m not bedridden or anything like that. I can still carry firewood and do what I have to do, but it hurts and I am getting tired of the discomfort.

I guess I’m no fun either because shed hunting never appealed to me. Then again, I’ve never really had a place to myself big enough to even consider shed hunting.

Shed hunting started out as a cabin fever/scouting exercise for me. Once i started finding them and learning what to look for and getting better at finding them it became an addiction. I still dont find as many as the guys who have large private farms with acres and acres of food plots but finding 20-30+ a yr on public ground while logging 50+ miles isnt too shabby imo

My son rented a cabin at Fishlake for three days for our birthdays. It was just my son and my grandson and me. With a few fish

That looks like such a good time.

You said “our birthdays”. Whose birthday(s) was it?
