Bucket List Hunts....man my mind goes different when I hear that honestly:

#1 - Rabbit hunting with my great-grandpa. I have his single shot .22 that I've heard so many tales about him chasing cotton tails with over the years. Rumor is often times he already would have one dead before even leaving the house in the morning and one Christmas morning shot two from the kitchen window and they ate them for dinner.

#2 - Deer or Moose hunting in the Boundary Waters...more for the trip and journey than the actual hunt - because let's be real honest, odds are strikingly low. Yet that country is so so gorgeous.

#3 - Bowhunting Kodiak Island grizzlies

    #4 - Bow Hunting Elk

I recommend it, I had a great time, Chief is the kind of guy that absolutely loves to hunt, almost like it's brand new every morning. If he'll have me again, I fully intended on making the trip; I'll be a little better prepared for the next trip.

I am really blessed. Almost all my hunts involve my boys. Hunting and fishing with my grandkids is great. I would like to try Coues deer and Caribou. Coues is very feasible for me but caribou I will have to save my pennies for a while.

Bow hunting Elk it’s hard to explain. Once it’s in your blood it’s hard to stop. I shot my first elk when I was 16 in the 70s. I have elk hunted ever since except for two years that I was on a mission. I know I have posted these pictures before but there’s nothing like bow hunting elk. It is very strenuous and hard work and that is before you shoot one. When you’re lucky enough to shoot one then the real work starts. Even though it kicks my butt I still do it every year. I always tease my wife I’m going to die on the mountain hunting elk.

My hunt would be a place where I could hunt deer like I did as a kid.
I started deer hunting at age 12, year 1965. No tree stands nothing posted you could hunt anyplace you wanted.
If no snow we hunted with neighbors making drives or just still hunted. Snow we were tracking bucks.
I only got to do it for maybe 10 years until people started posting their land and that put a stop to tracking deer. It was a great way to learn about deer and seeing a lot of different woods and swamps.
My dad was good at it, he killed some nice bucks by tracking them down over the years. When I was about 18 I entered him and me in local tavern big buck contest. Opening morning no snow I got a small buck still hunting. While hunting I was walking on a frozen creek, deer tracks showed on the ice, saw one set was huge. When I got home I told him about the big track. Couple days later we got good tracking snow and he tracked that buck and got him. Contest had pay outs for weight, spread and points. Only time in the contest history one buck won all three. My dad was tickled to win a couple hundred dollars. I was super proud of my dad.

That is so cool. My dad didn’t hunt. He always supported me in it. I remember riding my bicycle down to Sears and buying my first shotgun when I was 13. At that time we couldn’t legally hunt big game till we were 16. In the 80s they changed it to 14. So my boys were able to start hunting Big game at 14. Now it is 12.

Times have sure changed. It was only about 6 miles away. I had saved up all summer so I can buy it before the duck hunt. I had A cheap pair of waders a dozen old decoys with kite string and anything heavy enough to weight them down.

When I was in school, if it was rifle season we had a rifle in the truck. if it was duck season we had a shotgun in the truck and if it was bow season we had a bow in the truck and we always had a fishing pole in our truck. I would not dare to do that today. I still keep a fishing pole in my truck. You should see all the food we take when we’re taking the grandkids fishing. You would think we bought the store out. They have fun I have fun life is good

What are the odds of there being a big spike in contestants next year and me ending up on team 12 some way, some how to balance the teams out? 1 in 1,000,000,000,000?

    Don’t I wish.

Sorry about dropping off the map for a couple of days.

I hunted Thursday with no luck. I came really close at last light, but the does came straight to my tree, which has happened a lot this season. By the time the stare down was over and I had a shot it was too dark.

I took Friday off and after I made the trip way back in the woods to retrieve my second stand we spent the day pitching horseshoes, shooting bows and just having fun.

I made the trip home this morning. I’ll have to decide on whether or not I want to make one more trip to Wattensaw this month. It would be great to tag out there. Not many people manage to tag three deer on that WMA in a single season. I’ve only done it once.

I didn’t come home empty handed though. Glenn and Bubba Wilkins had a lot of old venison they wanted to get rid of and they asked me if I wanted it for the dogs. It’s from 2018 and it’s vacuum sealed really well so I said I’d take it. It’s thawing now and we’ll grind it and package it for the dogs.

They also gave me about 20 pounds of flathead catfish fillets. I can’t wait to fry some of those up.
