I would like to hear more details how this happened and what caused it.

A squirrel chewing on the straps, slipping, someone messing with the stand, stand shifting.... There are a lot of reasons someone could fall that could be unforseen. Just not smart to climb up without one.

I tie my ladders to the tree in 5 different places and add new straps every year, I over overlap the straps from the previous year. My favorite stand has 15 ratchet straps holding it to the tree. The tree would have to come down for that stand to move on that tree. The day I need a harness to feel and be safe on one of my stands is the day I buy a cammo bike helmet to wear while I hunt as well just incase.

Sota I believe Dean was climbing up his ladder and his foot slipped. His leg got caught on the backside and while trying to free himself he fell out and landed on his head. A safety harness would not have helped Dean in this case but a life line would. I haven't messed with them yet but will this season. My kids are getting old enough to go into tree stands and I do not want to let them hunt a stand with out a life line.

You are right. That tree would have to come down first. I add two ratchet straps to every loc-on stand I hang.

I don't own a rangefinder yet so its cellphone or harness for me... the one time I crawled into a 30ft stand on the side of a ridge in ohio on my cousins property without one I couldn't let go of the stand, I looked around a bit started shaking shook my head an said no deer is worth it! An climbed back down... all I ended up killing from the ground was a big fox squirrel lol

Hand warmers. I swear my hands get cold way too fast. I bought those little things in bulk. I wish they made a heated glove that was easy to shoot in.

I also have come to enjoy a rangefinder - though never been able to use it on a deer since I got one!

My underwear...not so brand specific as I just can't hunt without them.

Bahahaa...but to the OP on a serious note (I mean underwear is crucial) but to me the one thing I have grown to have to have is my rangefinder...
