public land hunter here, I hunt both public and private. for me I like public land cause theres so much more for me to hunt!
Also the spot that you picked on that map is also good. I don't want to take you away from it. But what I would do would be mobile. I would fine the fresh sign and sit it where ever that may be Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
My giant white oaks are dropping BIG time this year!! I'll be hitting my Public land this evening, first sit of the season. I'll have a NNE wind with clouds, perfect conditions for this location! I'll post my results later tonight.
On your map just south of where you dropped your pin is a spot where several ravines come together but the cover thins and makes a good pinch point.
I'm starting my first season of public land adventures and I'm really excited I hope I can get back with success pics.
Got me a nice doe eating those acorns right under my stand! Couldn't have been a more perfect evening hunt.
I hung a trail camera on public a couple days ago where I saw a 130ish buck last year and passed him. Itching to go check it! Hoping 1.5 miles is deep enough that I don't have to worry about other people messing with it
I believe that is the single most important aspect of Public land hunting! If you want few to no hunters, and deer that are relatively undisturbed, you need to go in where most others don't. It's really that simple. I have about a mile walk from the closest parking area where I hunt, but when I'm where I need to be I almost never see another hunter. I'm talking years of hunting here too.
I was about a mile deep last year my first year hunting public and my stand got jacked. The thing is its far but an easy walk. Saw tons of deer every time I sat there though, the age structure just isn't great
Check my cam and had a ton of doe pics and then a few pics of this guy.. really skinny looking which is weird cause there's no shortage of food
I'd love to do more public land bow hunting but there isn't a single piece of public around here that I can get more than a half mile away from a road and they all get pounded once pheasant opens.
Have been hunting public land since 1967 ! I hunt reasonably big woods ! many sections I hunt I can walk for 3 miles or more in any direction--up until the county mowed down all of the oak trees, My method was to hunt within 60 yards of the east end of any east west running oak ridge with acorns--Bucks would casually sneak close to this end of ridge scent checking for does and or looking over for safety--I shot many a fine buck 20 to 50 yards to the east of these ridges Now with all the clear cutting and no acorn ridges I now wait to find buck sign, then set up, still works but much harder and waiting for steady sign is very difficult
