Public land hunter here. Got a few pics of deer that made it through the season. Haven't put out cameras since I got these pics after the season ended.
I have been hunting public land for 30years. Have never shot any bucks over 6 pointers. There are a few but are far and few between. I 'll post some pics later of this years hit list. They are not up to the standards compared to the deer shot on BHOD but you gotta take what's available.
Very much so! It's always an uneasy feeling leaving anything of value (stands/cams) sitting in the woods for long periods, but if you use your imagination and good judgement when placing your cams, you should be OK. Try to place them where you wouldn't expect there to be much human traffic, but still a likely spot to see some deer. I've been running 2-3 cams for 9 years on State Land without one getting taken. I've gotten a few pics of people, they just weren't thieves.
I live in PA, but have been hunting Ohio public going on 7 yrs this season. Got some great bucks on cam and have taken some good ones in years past, currently I have 8 cams on Public with 4 hang ons. Haven't seen another person where I hunt in all the years I've hunted out there. Hope to keep that streak going! Good luck fellas
I refuse to believe this, as I usually trip over 8 PA guys on my way to a stand... then another 6 from NJ... then 4 more from various other east coast states. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I wish you luck, early! I grew up hunting the eastern counties, and the nonres hunting pressure pushed me out. It was completely insane. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks! It's the cheap cost and OTC licenses doing that. But, I'll be hunting on a friend's lease, I'm a cheater.
Infiltrator!!! Dude, that's awesome. With private access, you're in the right place! I'll be expecting big things from you this fall... big things!!
Yea Josh, the guy I'm hunting with has killed a number of serious wall hangers. To say I'm looking forward to this hunt would be an understatement!
True story, I only bow hunt it. Been there one time for gun season and it was stupid, never went back. Never seen or ran into another guy during archery and late season. I hunt there roughly 15-20 times a season.
I haven't gun hunted in over a decade. Wait.... You're hunting the same area 15-20 times in a single season?? Suddenly, the fog has lifted and I can see clearly lol... Good luck to you! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
What up fellas! Here's some of my trail cam stuff. Hunting public land exclusively this year! By choice! I will bag me one! Gonna happen! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Hey guys, do yal know anyone that's getting it done on public land? I got a podcast and I'm trying to find guys to interview that know what the hell theyre doing. Just wondering if there was anyone famous or not that seems to do the dang thing every year. You can message me with suggestions. Don't want to burn this forum up w this or anything. Just trying to find quality guys. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
In 40+ years of hunting in 10 different States mostly on public ground I have taken deer just about every year if I wanted to. It can be done and Google maps makes it easier, but boots on the ground is the only way. Cameras placed with climbing sticks keeps loss down. Learning where the hunters push the deer helps. Just this weekend I went in and cleaned the shooting lanes and opened up trails for the deer. The deer move out of this area in the spring because most years it floods. Late September the deer move in when the fields next door are harvested the deer come in to this area for cover. They will use the trails I make for them and since it is a mile in from the nearest parking in 5 years I have never seen another soul but take a deer or two every year from this stand.
Spend about 80% of my stand time on MI public land. Haven't hung any cams yet (next weekend) and won't scout/pull cards until Sept. 30 (day before opener.) I've hunted that area for over 10 years so I pretty much know generally where I'll be
