Ran into a guy at the gas station last night who is hunting the same public where I killed my buck a few weeks ago. Asked if he's had any luck and he told me he's been chasing a nice buck around for a week or two now. He's seen him a couple times but always too far away. Says he was 170 yards last night and that was too far, but if he came into 80 he'd take a poke at him with the crossbow. I just kind of nodded and thought to myself "So you're the reason everyone hates crossbow hunters."

I have ran into a few of those on public land myself. I just will never understand their thought process, like how one could think that is an ethical shot I will never know.

Some more from my card pulls on public land... they're out there... you can get these bucks people pay thousands of dollars for.

I hunt with both, but I don't/wouldn't shoot any farther out with my CB than I do with my compound. It's not just hitting the deer, killing it is the goal.

Yeah I mean shooting further out takes on other challenges that don't take into skill. There's a lot of variables that come into play even if you're shooting a ravin crossbow. Taking into account string jump is mostly what I'm getting at. Back in the day it was common to aim low and hope for the best. But deer jump the string differently depending on the stance they're in before the shot. It's a lot of info to process before hand. I mean if one feels confident that's one thing. But every time I shoot a deer I pray to God (seriously) that I made a good shot and the tracking job won't be hard. Patience and the ability to say no to a shot are really things we should preach more ab. I've lost a ton of deer on certain angles and what not.

Are you guys using anything special to secure your trail cams? The WMA near me is loaded with other hunters.

    Security box and a cable.

I have still had them stolen. Had 3 shot of the tree. He would keep shooting the lock till it busted then take the camera

I've had 10 out and only had 1 stolen. Best advice I can give you is don't put them in easy to access places. This could be distance, terrain, or places that are over looked. If I see a tree stand around the area this season I will not put a camera out for next season. Also keep in mind that if there's something you're seeing on a map, other people are probably seeing the same thing. I'd say screw the lock boxes and all that bs. Get a cheap $25 Tasco at Walmart or buy them used. If it's stolen big whoop.

I am pretty sure I know who it is but I can’t prove it. My cameras are all 1-1.5 miles from the main road. And it is all flat where I hunt so it’s not about maps either.
He just walks through squirrel or deer hunting, finds it and shoots it off the tree. He even cut down the deer feeder ( bucket style, yes it is legal to bait on this public) my brother put out there. I try to do all the things you have said but it still gets stolen

Well guys I tagged out with a pretty nice buck on public land here in Arkansas. He wasn't the big one I was after but still a trophy to me. I can't think God enough for everything he's blessed me with. Hunting these animals alone is a gift from from God. Anywho, here's some pics and if you wanna hear the story it's on YouTube as well as iTunes. Just search huntzilla. [IMG][IMG][IMG]

I just shot a doe off of some Arkansas public land the other day. Looks like you scored on a great buck though!

Well yes and no just in case I do tag out I have another option. A friend of mine was wanting to go to Illinois which has some good deer for sure but I feel like being able to put the time in to scout is more valuable than just going where there are bigger deer. Plus with a family and me taking huntzilla to a new level this year I just want to make sure I have time to hunt.

Hey Guys, just released a new podcast. I interview Greg Litzinger aka the bowhunting fiend. Really sharp dude who hunts highly pressured public land in New Jersey. Lots of good info on this one. Anywho, let me know what you think. [IMG]

Well looks like tag soup again this year, but that's part of the challenge of hunting a mature buck! I've been scouting this new area of the black hills and have found an area with steep hills and low hunting pressure. I have several bucks coming to two scrapes in the area, three of which are mature. I passed on many younger bucks again this year.
Gonna try some different tactics for next season after listening to pod casts.
Huntzilla I like your pod cast keep up the good work!
