That’s a great buck!!! What public land? Sam Houston?? It was down south East Texas right? Congrats man! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Yes SE Texas at Big Thicket National Preserve in saratoga. I just started hunting it this year and I've really grown to it. This is the second deer I've gotten from there. And thanks man!
Great story and ending, it's what hunting is all about! Well done Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
Back after it trying to get my archery buck in Minnesota , walked out to my stand today while they were quite a few people out with they’re dogs in the fields and sure enough they must have bumped up the big 10 and he was bedding behind my stand and I couldn’t see him , he spooked when I set my bow down to climb the tree, bummer, but definitely keeps my spirits high knowing he around! Hunting a new piece of public about 30 minutes from my house. Walked in 2.15 miles on the trails. Straight shot from the parking lot is about a mile. Hoping to at least see some deer today! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
anyone look for the biggest and hardest trees to climb for a hang on stand? Especially on public , love sitting in these big red oaks Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Maybe you could get longer straps for climbing sticks, I have thought about doing that as well but haven’t looked into it to see how hard they are to find Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Yeah , it’s nice in the fall with leaves still on it , I dropped this little 8 out of it back during the rut! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I've exclusively hunted public land for the past 10 years. Have yet to take a nice buck but I don't give up easy. I also did a DIY public land elk hunt out in Colorado 3 years ago. No luck there either but atleast I got into some elk, just no shot opportunities. I was happy just to locate elk on my first trip out west.
Hey Guys, I'm not posting this on my social media stuff bc I have too many people locally that keep up with me. But I just felt like I had to post this to give some of the guys out there giving it hell on public land a little oomph. This is a buck I'm hunting named Sue. I'm not going to say what state I'm in but if you follow my podcast (Huntzilla podcast) you can connect the dots. It's not known as a big buck state or anything. I've been after him for over a week now. I saw him last week and put out cameras around areas with a lot of scrapes. I got him on 3 different locations spread over a quarter mile. Anyway, if this works out you heard it first here. Also the last picture is a 10pt I killed last week on public land. He broke his main beam off after the shot and I had to go back and find it. Anyway the whole story of that hunt is on my Facebook Fan Page. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Thanks man! I'm off work til next Monday. Said a prayer with my daughter just a little while ago... gotta get up at 2:30 to make it back there. It's taking a toll for sure on me physically but it's worth it. I really appreciate it. This will be the biggest buck I have ever taken. A lot of people gave me **** when I started hunting public land. I've been at it for over 10yrs in the outdoor industry. Video blogged for outdoor life magazine for a bit and tried other bizs. I can't describe the rush and feeling that public land has given me. I am truly blessed to have the opportunity at a buck like this. And if I could prove to all the naysayers that I could do it in public lol man that'd feel great! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
The hard work will pay off! Just keep at it. I hope that cold front tomorrow morning will send him by! Honestly, public land hunting is far more exhilarating to me than hunting private property. Good luck with connecting with him. But don’t let the people speaking negativity get in the way of the hunt. Enjoy just being out there and the experience! You're right I mean I've been in a pretty down place. I had high aspirations of being something in the outdoor industry and things didn't work out. I'm not playing victim here it was my fault. I didn't push hard enough but I pushed pretty hard. Had loads of debt and went through bouts of depression but Public Land has honestly lifted me out of all that. Got me back to what I really love. It's just hunting in the purest form. Nothing like it. Glad to have stumbled upon it! And this archery stuff... man ain't nothing like sticking deer with a bow and string! Just the sounds it makes when it hits the deer. Just something primal! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I've hunted mainly public for 23 years. I haven't put in the time to get on a big one, but people in our hunting party have. They do the scouting necessary to find a shooter and then get on it. They have filled 2 cabins full of shoulder mounts (lost a bunch to a fire), but it's certainly putting in time. Instead of spending time and money on food plots, its spent on walking boots, cameras and stands. They have lost their fair share of the last 2 to other hunters. I just like to be able to walk for miles and not hit a road. Sent from my SM-G930V using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
