Thanks man!! I am so so happy to have been able to shoot him. It is definitely one I will remember for the rest of my life! I forgot to mention that he was walking into the wind. So my scent stream was parallel with him! Pretty nuts! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
You show a lot of integrity contacting the warden like that. Hats off to you brother. Great buck!! Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
Thank you sir!! I have found that a transparent policy is the best policy. Especially since I am trying to become a game warden, I try to do everything legal. I am super appreciative that they let me keep the buck! Now it's your turn for a buck down post Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Going to give him an hour but I don't think he will need it, 4 more puddles like this within the first 20 feet Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Well he only went 20 yards but then dove off into a gulley. Took me and my wife (she's the best) 4.5 hours to drag him out of the grand canyon, then another 2 miles of dragging before we said screw it and ran to Fleet Farm to buy a game cart (best purchase I've made in a long time). Needless to say he isn't even close to the biggest buck I've ever shot, but it's the first time in 6+ years I've gone bow hunting and my first time hunting public land and he's a deer I'll never forget. end sappy post. Not sappy in the least. Great story and even better that you got to share part of it with the wife! Memories are not always of the biggest or the best! Congrats to you Pasty
Missed a good one this morning. I thought it was an 18-yard when he was really at 25. Sailed right below him. I'll be honest with you that one really stings. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
I held really low on him thinking he would duck. He obviously didnt. Nicked his briscuit. My first year using a single pin sight set at 25 yards. Maybe I just choked. Who knows. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
A cold front moved in so I sat all day. Saw a squirrel. Not what I expected but the wind blew all day. Still great to be out there.
Fresh snow here in Minnesota temp dropped to 28 for in the morning from the low 50's all week should be good movement praying for the best! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Saturday morning I'll finally be spending some time posting in this thread. My son-in-law and I will be leaving Tennessee at 6:00 am Saturday headed to Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri for 11 straight days of hunting. We'll be bowhunting from Saturday afternoon all the way through Friday evening. Gun season opens Saturday the 11th, so we'll be taking our rifles and orange also. I love bow hunting, but I'm also looking forward to letting my Marlin 1895SBL get some exercise.
So Friday morning I went back to the public spot and had the place to myself. As I was walking in I see a trail camera on the tree I was going to set up in with a bunch of candy wrappers at the base of the tree. I moved on from there and went a couple hundred yards closer to where the deer come from. I saw 4 does then I saw a buck but didn't get a good look at him so I hit the antlers together and got him to come in. Here is the tactacam footage of the deer, I'm still learning how to hold the bow while filming. Just watch how he reacts in the beginning he is rubbing a tree and the upload to youtube effected the video quality.
Alright, well saturday i was able to finnesse time for an afternoon hunt. So I got out to my spot about 3:00 pm and found a nice tree to sit in. Just as I was unpacking my stand I heard crazy rustling thrpugh the fan palms about 50 yrds in front of me. I grabbed my bow got ready and out came this young buck cruising like he was scared. He headed my way quickly then veered off to his left and just kept going; without ever stopping or looking at me. I sat there for about a minute wondering if I moved in to close to a bedding area. Then more rustling started and out came a huge buck following the same trail as the little buck. Thats when i realized he was chasing off the youger buck. I tried grunting at him as he disappeared hoping he would come back. When I realzied that neither were going to come back I setup my stand only to have no more action that evening. But I was still satisfied with my days hunt as I got to see a crazy event. So I left my stand hanging for the next day. I got in the stand the next morning about 6:30. The moon was bright and it was 34° which is really cold for SE Texas. So i figured that the deer would be moving around noon when it warmed up to the 40s-50s. Right around 11am I heard something brush the fan palms in the distance. I looked up to see a siloutte of a deer disappear into the thick about 60 yrds away. So i grunted at it with my grunt call and waited to see what wpuld happen. About ten minutes later i could see a deer coming from the direction of where I saw that deer disappear. As he came into view I was thrilled to see he was legal. He began to ease his way down the trail 20 yrds to my left, the perfect oppetunity for a right handed shooter. Right before he stepped out into the clearing i drew back. As he was walking by I called out to him like they do on the hunting channel. He stopped and i let that arrow fly. I waited an hour to find him about 80yrds away layed down on the trail. I knew then I had success.
