These two saddles lead to nowhere.....not only are NOT the path of least resistance...they lead to some of the harshest terrain on the map.
To the west of the saddles is swamp, and to the east at the bottom of the cliff is swamp. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
So you think I should forget the saddles? And go to the pinch point? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think you need to scout it looking for a buck bed...forget about it being a saddle and focus on it as a ridge that is a prime bedding location. You can gamble and hunt it blind...best bet is to know exactly where he is bedded, how to enter and what tree to climb. When you scout it check the yellow for bedding and the red for possible travel routs.
I just don't want you walking in there and busting a buck off his bed trying to hunt one of those saddles.....that's way to far to walk for that to happen. And I'm done hijacking the public land thread...sorry Buckeye.
That top saddle you marked would be a very good one. Deer moving east to west or vise-versa around the south end of the lake will use that saddle.
I know, I am doing this blind. this is something I should have done during the off-season. I’m ground Hunter, so I don’t need a tree. There is definitely a travel route on the military crest of the ridge. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Nope, it wouldn't get any use at all as a saddle. Looks to even have a bluff around the east side it's so steep.
To be honest, I'm not to sure how to determine if it is a buck bed or not. There is so much thick mountain laurel, his bed could be anywhere in there. Should I try the bump and dump technique? in the morning after sunrise, Walk in there non-stealthy, like I'm not a predator, bump the buck and observe where the buck was bedded, and then setup, trying to ambush him when he comes back?
Swamp. If I were to go in blind, I would go on something like Caltopo first. There is an elevation feature that you can use that will highlight whatever you want it to. I would figure out about what 1/3 elevation from the top was, and then look at a wintertime pic to see where the thickest patches are on that elevation line. I would then scout my way in with the right wind looking for hot sign and set up like that. There won't necessarily be a bed surrounded by a bunch of rubs, but more likely some rubs a little ways away from the bed possibly leading back to it. The bed itself would most likely be a big solitary bed, or maybe even a couple where he has adjusted his position. Just my .02.
I disagree. The hills are very steep and deer won't travel pretty much sheer drop offs. Path of least resistance not most resistance. Just my humble opinion Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
What I see are flat grounds sandwiched in between steep hils. Runways that would allow deer to travel. I also see swamp and or places with thicket cover. Edge lines that deer could travel and jump back into cover if threatened. The point I marked with that bigger yellow circle seems to be where some nice topography comes together couple with a small pond that would route deer travel around it. Maybe even a high ground water hole for deer during the rut. Just my humble opinion Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
Hello all Public land hunting junky here. Hunt strictly public land in Mississippi. Love every minute of it. Anyone can shoot a deer when they are unpressured and walk out into a food plot. Takes a real hunter/woodsman to kill high pressured public land buck, especially where dog hunting is still legal. So to all my public land brothers good luck.
