Wow Joe - I'm gonna hate to see what you are holding out for if you don't take this animal! For me, I'm happy with the does that fill my freezer. Of course, i would not pass up a chance on a buck of this caliber. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.
Good to see you back on the forums REMY!!! SMITTY, ya i've been thinking i would be crazy to pass on him, when my main goal for RI this fall is to self film a buck kill. long story short i forgot to hit record last september when i got my buck! I'm heading out to Illinois again for the first week in November, aiming for 140 class or higher. This year will be totally different for me, because i overcame my fear of heights (for the most part) so i don't need the cushion of the front bar on my climber so my LW assault and LW sticks will be used to get to where the big boys are. (Last year i could only find 3 straight trees for my climber, and only brought a climber)
Don't know if I'd call you crazy Joe, but it certainly sounds like you've got a plan and that's always good. Now, not hitting record - now THAT'S crazy! That is also one of the reasons I don't film. I have enough trying to remember things like arrows or my release! So you're headed to Ill. That sounds great. Is your son going with you this year? Hope you have a great time. I'm sure we'll chat again before then. Not happy about heights eh, well, if you find the right tree in the right spot, you don't have to go very high. If you overcame the fear of heights, congrats! That's a major accomplishment. Being 6'3 and 280, I don't have a fear of heights, but I do worry about that sudden stop if I land. I'm gonna make a real mess! That harness gets used every time I'm in the stand! Remy - glad your oaks look good. That will help come the season. Trail cams are fun, but I don't have the area to get the most from them. Had one stolen, yaddayaddayadda. As we can't bait, catching them on a trail is hit or miss for me. I get plenty of does, but not too many bucks. No complaints, they are fun.
Thanks Joe. Glad to hear you're conquering your fear of heights. That's awesome that you're hitting Illinois and hope you have a monster step in front of you. I was hoping to make a trip to Kansas with my uncle this year, he goes every year, but it looks like that is gonna fall through. Oh well hopefully next year. I have decided to make the 2008 Diamond Marquis my main bow for this season. It's an amazing shooting bow. I just put my NAP Apache dropaway rest on it yesterday and it shoots even better. I'll take a pic or two of it in a few when I get home and post it. Yeah Smitty I love the does aswell and they fit great in the freezer. I have yet to be skunked in my very short bowhunting career. This will be my 3rd season with the bow. Harvested 1 doe my first year and 2 last season. Hopefully I can keep the trend going and get at least 3 does this season. But always looking for my first buck with a bow. Haha
This is gonna be my main hunting rig from now on. I really like my 2012 Bear Legion but this 2008 Diamond Marquis just shoots a bit better for me. It was my father's bow he bought new back in 08. He has lost interest in hunting and gave me this bow. It literally only had prob 50 arrows shot through it. I'm really diggin it.
Unless i read it wrong....the new regs are out as of august 1st. It looks like with a regular archery license you are allowed TWO bucks this year....and THREE doe in ZONE TWO......and FOUR doe in zone ONE Time to make room in the freezer!!! http://www.dem.ri.gov/pubs/regs/regs/fishwild/hunt1415.pdf
Put game cams up on my friends property the other day. We got thirty pics to go through(some of us lol). He said there is one with a big shadow but a tree was in the way of the cam it is sending of a big glair in the shot. I hope we get some good pics. cant wait for opener to happen. Hunting in Johnston RI.
Looks like I'm gonna be mainly hunting zone 2 but some in zone 1. I see they dropped the antlered deer count down to 2 from 3. Not a bad thing in my opinion.
...maybe i did read it wrong. i thought it meant i could get 2 buck tags for archery? last year with a regular license it was only 1 buck archery
Joe, think you read it wrong. Last year was 3 buck total. This year - 2 buck any method. Does are 6 (I think). I know with the all outdoors it's 2 and 6 for a total of 8. There are restrictions depending on your zone, but in general those are the numbers. Yeah, clean out the freezer if you are lucky! Welcome Keith. Good luck this season. Remy - it's not a bad thing at all. Sadly, many will only take the extra buck and no does. Just can't fix stupid. Of course that's just my opinion...lol It's nice to have that extra buck tag, but as far as I'm concerned, the does taste better! For those interested - it appears that Block Island is going to be open all season instead of just during the week. I'm not positive about all the details, but that appears to be the idea this year. All I know is that it has delayed the cull for another year! Hoping that an alternative solution can be found.
I hunt Johnston and Big River but cant tell on the map what zone. I think Jhonston was zone 1 and Big River was 2. I feel this is going to be a good year for me and my friend. I hope more than any thing he gets one. He is a returning Vet. I hope all the work and pain he has gone through will pay off.
gotcha!! I only hunt archery so that's why i'm happy, i didnt realize it was limiting it by one buck total. between my son and I, we plan on popping at least 4 doe this year, and one buck each...keeping an extra tag in case we see one of those giant RI ghost bucks!! I love this state!! Best hunting, and hunting regs that i know of!
Joe last year you could have gotten more than 1 archery. The way I was told it worked was it was 3 total anyway you wanted to harvest them. But you had to have the respective tag that applied to the method used to hunt. And I'm pretty sure it's the same this year just they dropped the number to 2. For example you could harvest an archery buck. Get another archery buck tag and get another buck. But you can't use an archery tag to harvest 1 with a shotgun or muzzleloader. You would have to buy the 3rd tag in the respective way you want to hunt. So in theory you could've harvested 3 archery bucks. Yeah Smitty I hear ya. I'm hoping people take more does I know I will be if I'm fortunate enough to have the opportunity.
I agree Joe. RI has an amazing archery season and regulations. Can't beat it really. Sept15- Jan31 of straight archery if you wish. That's awesomeness!!
Have any of you guys ever hunted Block Island? I am wondering what it is like there. I've never even been there let alone hunted it.
Hmm...I went to ****s to buy my license last year and the kid dint know how to do it so i went to DEM in providence, and she told me i was allowed only one buck in archery, one muzzleloader one shotgun, or get the all outdoor and harvest 3 bucks 5 doe any way i prefer, so thats why i bought the all outdoor. Kind of don't like this now, because it means during shotgun season the woods will be a warzone!!!:TU:
Has any one heard about mountain lions in RI. I hate facebook but my wife is addicted and saw a post of a mountain lion in Gloster RI. I dont think that its real but she does. There goes my peace when I go hunting she will be buging me about this for a long time. If any one has info about this please post. It says some thing about dem letting them loose for the fisher cats. It makes no sence to me.
