The new addition to my family... **update** New Pics - First Bird Well, as some of you know... I've recently added a new family member. He's 9.5 weeks old and I'm already attached. He's a German Wirehair Pointer, that looks like a shorthair right now. I've had several wirehairs throughout my life but this is the first one I've had since I got out of school. His name is 'Hoyt' for obvious reasons. Yes, I shoot a Bowtech but I still own a Hoyt and always will. We've been working on several commands lately including: No, whoa, here and sit. With all the wirehairs I've worked (9 total) with he is the quickest learner. Friday will mark his second week. Tonight I took him on his first Dove hunt and it was truly awesome. I took him to my buddy's grandmothers house just 15 minutes from the house and I've personally killed about 500 birds off of this place in the last 5 years. Tonight was probably my favorite hunt and I didn't fire a shot. I took two friends to sit near the waterhole while I took the pup off a little ways to play and get used to the gunfire. His mother was shot around while he was in the womb and nothing bothered him at all. After about 1.5 hours of shotgun fire we had progressed closer to the "shooting zone" and he was having a ball. I planted a few dead birds in the tall grass and in no time he was learning to trust his nose and finding every planted bird in record time. He ended up finding a cripple that had been lost and I couldn't have been more proud. He loves the water and has a great nose. **Update** Tonight, after a half hour of shooting around him... I killed the first bird over him. I bought a brand new Remington 1100 G3, 20ga this spring. This was the first trigger pull with the gun and also the first bird killed over Hoyt. The bird wasn't entirely dead, so I lead him in the direction of the bird. His nose dropped, tail went nuts and a few seconds later he was locked up solid on point. It was awesome. Then he pounced on it and carried it, head high pouncing around like he won a gold medal. One proud papa here. So here he is... my new buddy, Hoyt.
I love the dog and the name as well! Congrats on a fine dog their and hope he brings you years of enjoyment. Can you send me a phone pic mail of him? T
Nice lookin' pup Dubs. Is he chewing/eating everything he finds? Wow. That tongue would make Gene Simmons jealous. :D
He's a pointing breed, so he'll by quail, pheasant, chukar and hungarian partdridge pointer, retriever, and tracking dog. :D JB, he will be somewhere around 60lbs when he's full grown. Finch, he's doing pretty well with the chewing but he's a biter and he will indeed eat anything!
