Born'n raised in Genesee Co; but live out of state now. Now I get to pay $250 to Lansing for the privilege for the chance to take 2 deer/yr from Isabella/Montcalm Counties. <sigh> Knew I should've bought a lifetime license before I moved away...
I live in Clinton County. My family owns 158 acres. We have permission to hunt 4 other properties. Cant wait to put a DEER on the ground already. FYI, I'm one of 11 in my family, so it is really busy around here.
Howdy...Live in Livingston county. Hunt here, Washtenaw, Isabella mostly. Im with Coh, I don't hunt public. A good buddy of mine does very well on public in Brighton year after year.
I bang on doors every year. This year I got a new 5 and 6 acre piece. Nothing crazy, but free. Last year found a 160 acre place..free. I put ads on CL but nothing really worth it came...just a bunch of money hungry ppl.
Does anyone use the HAP program? And what is your success rate? Looking for a driving partner from Oakland County to possibly hunt out in Jackson/Hillsdale area
Michigan DNR has the Hunter Access Program (HAP) where they give you a list of Farmers that allow anyone to come and hunt on their land as long as you obey their rules. Some have mandatory drop boxes some do not.
Never heard of that. I'm sure that resource is used to the max by the ppl that do know about it. Can't say I wouldn't try it depending on what the land looks like/is surrounded by.
There are a lot of Farmers that use the HAP program so I'm sure I could find a spot. the only problem is you don't know if you have a spot until you get there the first time. I wish DNR had phone #'s you could call to talk to the farmers or at least see if their place is full but instead you have to drive to all the spots. Not fun driving 2-3 hours and not find a spot
State land in brighton ?? Is it by bishope lake? HHHMM interesting first time i have heard about this might have to look into this over the summer and try to find a hidden gem. For public land I would reccomend Dansville game area, they have around 5,000 acres with food plots spread out through the area. I just did a article on this place I will give you guys the link when it gets posted.
For you brave souls that hunt public land here's a link to a article I wrote up for Dansville state game area. Would recommend checking this place out. There's a small party store that has pictures posted up of bucks taken in the area and there are a few dandies that have come from this public land. Public Land Spotlight: Dansville State Game Area
Sweet! Just told my dad about it and we are definitely going to check it out. Thanks for the info man!
No problem, keep checking back to the midwest whitetail michigan tip/news section and im sure some more articles will pop up on some good public land areas. I know there has been one already posted
Picked up my DMAP yesterday for the city hunt...but won't be sitting anytime for the next 5-6 days at least - Rain, rain, rain...Might go get me some salmon instead. BTW - just reading through this thread...it should be titled 'the LP of MI'. No shortage of public lands up here...just a shortage of deer out in the big woods anymore. As good a chance to see a wolf as you would a buck...maybe better esp once you are away from any of the towns or farms(and those aren't hard to get away from).
