    Wondering how that works.

Is a bow that is longer axle to axle, easier to draw back, or generally harder?

So far the 2 shorter ones I have tried felt better to me.

Really all personal preference. Generally a longer ATA will be more stable. But everybody likes different things. I generally don't like bows when they get under about a 32" ATA. Some guys would complain that thats way too long. Just depends on what you like. The draw cycle or how hard they are to pull back really has more to do with the Cam shape, limb design, and poundage more than ATA.
