Last night at sunset I had a small buck come towards me but would not step through the brush line. All day today the wind was blowing a steady 10 mph and I was going to get in the stand at the creek bottom, but when I got to the turn, something told me to go back to last night's stand. I climbed into the stand at 5:15 PM and started doing a doe in estrus mixed with buck grunting. There was a buck coming in from the north but still 100 yards off. In the brush by the pond, I couldn't tell how big he was or how big his rack was. I was waiting patiently when I heard crunching to my rear. I looked back and there was another buck coming down the fence line on the other side of the fence and the brush. I had put out estrus wicks and was hoping he would get down wind of them and cross over. Much to my suprise he crossed the fence still upwind of the wicks and kept coming in! At 35 yards I "mah'd" him and let the arrow fly. I watched the arrow hit and the buck jumped. He took off towards the pond and I thought I was going to have another buck disappearing. He changed course and at 100 yards stopped and dropped. No death throws, nothing. Fletch920 came out and helped me out. Dave is pretty much the epitomy of a sportsman. Dave, his son, and I loaded the buck on the trailer and brought him back to hang. Dave looked at the entry wound and said I "smoked him". I will post pics and measurements in a bit! I forgot to add: After the arrow hit home, while I was praising His name for allowing my arrow to fly true, I started having back spasms. It sucks trying to climb out of the tree while having back spasms. Here 2+ hours later, still having them. IV, if you consider that a small buck then I must be hunting tiny little bucks! AWESOME buck, this is fantastic news. I am extremely happy for you.
That Muzzy 4 blade sure enough left a huge entry wound. The arrow broke off upon impact. Praise the Lord the shot went through the heart to keep the buck from suffering long.
Other than he was probably a 3 1/2 year old, his rack is small for this area. I've been chasing 3 other bucks in the area known as "The Ghost", "Heavy 9" and "Whitey". Any one of those 3 bucks would make this one look like a shame. Although, this buck does have a very nice coat.
