I made a couple of these up for the bowhunter ed classes I teach. On day one we ask the students what their maximum effective range is, on day two they get to prove it. The iron doe will test the students resolve. No one has to shoot at the range they claim, they are allowed to move up if they are not comfortable with the distance they claimed. Also no one HAS to shoot at the doe. Its 16 ga. galvinized and if you don't hit the vital hole you just ruined a shaft. So its strictly a volunteer shot at this target. It always surprises me what some students claim for max effective range. Most of them can't back it up when its time to shoot. Myself and some other local instructors feel as if a ruined arrow might help make the point. For what its worth I claimed 25 yds when I took the class and shot well.
Here they are before paint. About the size of a small Texas hill country doe. i'm the good lookin' guy in the middle!
That's a great idea, Greg. If you wanna get real froggy.....have 'em shoot 5 arrows. At your "EFFECTIVE" range (true), that shouldn't even make you flinch.
Pretty cool. I wish I had one of those. It would be fun to test myself and my friends from time to time.
That is awesome, that is a really good idea. How much would it cost for you to make me 2 and ship them to me.
Where are you in La.? My lease is an hour west of Shreveport. If you can pick them up I have enough material to make two more for free. Because of the size shipping would be quite spendy I would think.
I live an hour and half south of Shreveport off of I-49 but I will drive anywhere really to get them since it is not that far. Plus I like a road trip every once in awhile. LOL!!!
The lease is in Jefferson Tx. just north of Marshall. I'll get a couple more cut out and let you know when I'll be out there again. It may be a few weeks what with turkey season fixin to start. I hunt birds in west Texas so I won't be at the lease. since you are new, stick around and stay in touch.
That's a great idea to drive home the point (pun intended) of shot placement and effective range. Once someone misses at their "claimed" effective range, do you have them move up and shoot again?
I have shot these at local 3D tourneys. They are a lot of fun, and they claim lots of arrows over a weekend. Using them in a learning setting is neat, well done.
One old archery shop I frequented had a "tough man" target similar to your methods except it was rectangularly shaped and had a small hole in it. Your idea is much better and looks like it would be a blast to practice with. Great idea!!!
Very cool Greg, we have the iron buck challenge at a local 3D... that's where I got my Leupold RX-1000 :D
