Well Heckler conventional wisdom says its better to hunt evenings this early in the year because when you are going into a spot in the morning the deer are most likely on the way back to bed. But this team is anything but conventional. I would go with the morning hunt and try to get in at least an hour before sunrise to let everything calm down. Here in my area the deer will just bed in the corn but I imagine you will catch some moving between the timber and corn field. If the morning sit yields little success I would turn right around and try an evening sit.
I hear you! I can't count on the deer not bedding in the corn. There is a clear cut (power line) that runs the length of the property on the private side you can see from the road. I've set on the road in years past on a ladder in the back of the truck and watched deer filter into feed in the evening. The only reason I was going to try a morning sit is because of the south wind to try to catch them on their way back to bed. I've set on that end of the property in the evening with a south wind in years past and it wasn't good at all.
From Fitz- The rule that's broke the most often is always two photos of you, the deer, and your bow. We don't want to lose any points so please make sure when you submit your entries they meet all the above criteria.
Thanks Fitz for the reminder. I don't foresee any concerns. When I get him scored up I'll post 2 pics of him, but I'm out of town without him for a bit (I haven't posted anything on the entry page yet).
Well got 3 new stands up and 2 blinds and cut a new road into a piece of property we hunt and planted 5 new fall plots with oats, lots of sign and one good one on camera, wide 10 with a sticker off g-2, should be a good year and excited for the season, haven't been in property all year and wont go back in until season starts. Headed to Missouri this weekend and see if there are any deer on farm and get a couple sits in. Good Luck to everyone hunting already!!!!!!!!
13 more days till Illinois season, got to plant 2 more late season plots today and put up a few more blinds and I am ready for season, heading to farm in Missouri Friday afternoon to hang stands and cameras and hunt a few days..
Your a busy guy! I may get a sit in opening weekend here in Illinois but we close on out new house Sept. 30th so I am sure my wife will have plenty of stuff for me to do. I should at least get out the evening of the 4th to kick off my season.
Looks like everyone is ready to roll, my season starts tomorrow in a special regulation area. Years past it was doe only, but this year it's opened up to both doe and buck. Got permission on some new land in the suburbs where I live Bunch of deer around and some nice bucks also. My freezer is just bout empty so if opertunity presents itself I'll be putting 100 on the board.
Raining here today. The cold front is just starting to move through and the wind is going to switch from the North! I am in the stand tomorrow afternoon! I can't wait!!!
Been Storming here in Central IL on and off all morning. I am sure the farmers aren't happy with the stoppage in harvest but my yard sure is happy to have the water! It was starting to get pretty dry. Good Luck to all you guys who get a chance to pick up the stick and string this weekend.
Cool weather is coming to SW Pa also but not till Sunday, looking at 86 for a high Sat then down to a 71 high on Sunday. Nothing too crazy but the cooler weather gets me all pumped up.
Good luck to those getting out and hopefully cam pulls are productive. Can't wait to see pics from the food plots that are in or are going in. I won't target a doe this weekend as I try to get a couple hunts in for the MN opener (maybe another buck will drop into my lap and I'll add 50 points the fun way).
My first sit of my season was pretty uneventful. Although I know I had deer within 50 yards of me several times I didn't visually see them . They stayed hidden in the corn field. I could see lots corn stocks moving and hear them chowing down. At last light when I packed out I heard several blowing. I may have to think long and hard about trying to hunt the same spot in the AM as it appears most are waiting well after dark to enter the feed field.
Man we went from 88 degrees on Friday to a high of 70 on Saturday. Its days like that one that make you wish you could be in a tree stand.
My first sit was also not productive, however it was 87. I did see two smaller does, just nice to be out. Should be going out a few time this week in the evening for a doe.
