Going outside to prune up some apple and pear trees by myself. My buddy isn’t here to piss all over everything and follow me around. I know urs only been a week since he’s been gone but it’s just to quiet around the house without a dog. Nobody up to great me when I get home at 3am. We have started narrowing down our search for a new dog. Possibly Blue Heeler, Mountain Cur or wildcard Blood hound.
Good luck in your search. I am putting in a good word for the Cur. My BMC is the best dog I've ever had. Will get another. Sent from my SM-G981U using Tapatalk
I do have time everyday. I work 2nd shift so any dog would have my undivided attention as everyone else is at school or work then in the evening the rest of the family would have to do there part. Last dog I got in the picture he was a handful for everyone besides me. 130lbs of unneutered chaos but that’s what I liked about him. The kids are older now and a little more responsible. I’ve always wanted a hunting dog that’s why I’m leaning cur by a small margin over the heeler. I like the blood hound also but I think I’m done with large breeds for awhile. The health issues associated with them I’m trying to avoid. I’ve had American Bulldogs, Old English bulldog and American Staff mix the past 20yrs. Might be time for a change or hell just might get 2 dogs.
Hard to beat an American bulldog when it comes to smarts and home/family protection. Mine is three and really just coming into her own as an adult. I've had lots of different breeds.. My current ABD is the best dog I've ever had. That is once you get past slobbers
Pitched the idea of a chocolate lab to the wife she was reluctant, tried to play the baby boy card Nick wants to pheasant hunt , still hell no. Tried the grandsons will love a dock dog still no. Played the trump card consider it a horse you bought without talking to me about it beforehand, going to run with it and pay horse like prices for a chocolate lab trained to hunt pheasants and know the difference between a rooster and a hen by scent 10-12 should cover that.
Look into the APLA, American Pointing Lab Assoc. , I got Molson from a breeder in mid-west, but I remember breeders' in Minnesota.
That’s sorta like someone buying a rock that cost a lot and needs to be picked up in CO without discussion before hand. I think you should name the dog Rocky.
That was my ticket a Valentines Day dog 7yrs ago. Wife wasn’t buying it though. She had no choice by time I got him home.
lord, am I the Commie for not being a big fan of Labs? I had one, he was a really good dog in a lot of ways and a horrible dog in others. Long story short, the bads outweighed the goods. 1A - Scout: Standard GoldenDoodle. Sweetest assassin you will ever meet. Velcro dog (me) who wants nothing more than to sleep at/on my feet, but she also loves to run around and kill small animals or fight with our other much bigger dog (see OTTO) until he gets tired and gives up; then she declares victory and goes to sleep. 1B- OTTO: Giant Schnauzer, giant PITA. Great guard dog, best personality and smartest dog I've ever had. Great sense of humor but no people pleasing instinct. Does what he wants, when he wants, but mostly because he thinks it's funny. Giants are known to be hard to train because they're so stubborn, and his professional trainer said that he has always been most respectful/leery of Giants - and OTTO was still his most difficult student. He's just super independent and doesn't really care what people want or think. OTTO was also a bit of an alcoholic in his youth, and has been retarded expensive from cradle to grave (seriously looking at $15-20k not counting food.) He's also an awful shedder. But at about 2 years old, he decided he adored me and Mrs. Noodles and turned into the best dog ever. I know for a fact he would die for me and/or Mrs. Noodles. He has gone out of his way to alert me to things that literally can't be explained. He's like Lassie that way. He's an intentional comedian, and I am not BSing on that. He intentionally does things to get a laugh-and he even makes a kind of coughing sound when he himself is laughing. But he's on his way out, 3-5 years before it was supposed to happen. Effing cancer man.... Max: German Shepherd, fully trained K9 reject, sweet family dog and perfectly obedient. Great watch dog. Awful shedder. But he did not have the full self-awareness/humor that OTTO has. He would play, and he was a happy dog, but he was pretty basic there. Also died of cancer at a fairly young age (8). Doing him an injustice here, but he was so good it was almost boring. Sonny: Chessie/Yellow Lab Mix: Inherited from a family friend at about 2 years old; well house trained, good duck dog (before I could gun hunt) horrific shedder. Like he woukd shed carpet on top of carpet. He was a good family dog, but nothing special that way. Also, could not be trusted not to run away - let him out off leash at the house, and he was gone like the setter from Funny Farm for days on end. But he always came back within a few days...except the last time, he disappeared in the middle of gun deer season and that was that. Trip: Doberman. We 'temporarily' babysat him for 4 years while my uncle was stationed in Germany. Had him from the time he was about 2 until my uncle came back when he was 6. Then my uncle thought it was totally fine to take a bonded adult dog away from 2 kids and a (my) family....a-hole....anyway... Trip was a FANTASTIC dog and if I was ever going to buy another non-hunter, a Dobe would be at the top of the list. He was perfectly trained, really smart, a people pleaser, and a comedian. He also scared the bleep out of a lot of people (we lived in Flint where break ins were not exactly rare.) I remember being gone from the house at the hospital for a long period of time because my baby sister had something going on (regular occurrence at the time) and when we got home over 10 hours later, Trip had jumped up on and then crapped on the basement coffee table. Apparently, he did that because he knew it was 'bad dog' to crap on the floor. I can't really explain it, but Trip alerted to the fact he had crapped on the basement coffee table, then was offering to eat his own crap because he knew it was bad. My dad almost cried because Trip was so ashamed of himself. Had a few others who were fine dogs...but these were my Good Dogs. anyway, sorry for the diatribe...I have had some really good dogs in my life, and never really took the time to think about all of them at the same time. Knowing OTTO has not much time left has made me introspective on all those who I was blessed with before. Dogs are proof that there is a God and he loves us.
Hah, I was hammered! Mrs. Noodles wanted to get a little toasty and cracked open a bottle of wine.... after I had already had a couple whiskeys. Lol.
Yes the dog was cross eyed from time to time. That pic was not staged. He loved to tear apart my empties.
Like anything, it all depends on the dog. The labs I have had, have been amazing. I've had them since I was about five. Yes, we've had the stubborn ones (lab mixed with coonhound - he destroyed the house). But, overall, for me, the good outweighed the bad. I think that's just something for everyone - each one is different. But, with that being said, I am also pretty partial to beagles, too. Except for his hate for getting nails trimmed. He needs sedated - and that's just not in the picture for every time he needs them. We will be pinning him down and trying to get something this week. He screams bloody murder.
I'm a big fan of black and yellow labs. No offense to all the people with beloved choc labs, but they are just a lot different than a black or yellow. They're just not the people pleaser that yellow or black are. My only complaint about a lab is how they like to chew until about 2.5 years old, but other than that they are exactly what I like in a dog. Both hunters and pets. Most wouldn't be aggressive with an intruder, but they sure will bark and let you know there's one around. The only thing IMO that would make them better is if they were pointers and didn't shed so much. A lot of the places we go camping have Beggar's Lice or sometimes cockle burrs. They brush right off a Lab. My last dog was a lab/Border Collie mix. Best dog I've ever had. All the benefits of a lab, but also wouldn't let a stranger in the house if one of us wasn't around. She was super gun shy though, my only complaint. I've never seen a gun shy lab, so have to think that was something from the border collie side.
I bring the Field Champions in the house…never had hound not make a good house dog after they been broken an field proven.
